Many of us are waiting to see if Timothee Chalamet's Paul Atreides will become the genocidal messiah in the third Dune film by Denis Villeneuve. But before the movie comes to fruition, people have to see him in his upcoming comedy film, Marty Supreme.

Marty Supreme, directed by Josh Safdie, is also his solo directorial debut in feature films after the Safdie brothers decided to pursue solo careers. It looks like it is going well for Josh, as early reactions to his film are positive. The director unveiled his film during the New York Film Festival, which caught everyone off guard, but it was worthy, as everyone appeared to like this new feature.

It will be released on December 25, 2025, in the United States, with A24 distributing. For Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden, the Danish entertainment company Nordisk Film is distributing it. Other than Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion, Kevin O'Leary, and more are in the movie.

What are the critics saying about Timothee Chalamet's performance?

Twitter (now X) was rife with discussions about the film after those who saw the movie shared their views on the movie, who were especially positive about Timothee Chalamet's performance. David Canfield of The Hollywood Reporter writes:

"MARTY SUPREME: Major, exhilarating filmmaking from Josh Safdie. Timothée Chalamet’s career-best performance—he was born to play this guy—with a tremendous Odessa A’Zion leading a superb supporting cast. It’s a wow."

Diego Andaluz, the chairman of Discussing Film, praised him too by writing:

"MARTY SUPREME is Safdie’s best film yet. A kinetic odyssey that plays like a deranged cross between CATCH ME IF YOU CAN & UNCUT GEMS. Timothée Chalamet delivers the performance of a lifetime in this unforgettable, awe-inspiring cinematic tour-de-force that fires on all cylinders."

Variety's Ramin Setoodeh echoed these sentiments and said:

"‘Marty Supreme’ is ‘Uncut Gems’ meets ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ meets ‘Jerry Maguire,’ carried by Timothée Chalamet’s best performance yet. I loved it so much."

Just recently, Josh Sadie said that he has finished filming the movie, and then he just dropped the film, just like that. No surprise that everyone was surprised. Rotten Tomatoes doesn't have any reviews to assign it a score on its platform, but by the looks of these reviews, it ought to be a fresh one.

Like Josh, Benny Safdie has also directed his solo feature film, The Smashing Machine, starring Dwayne Johnson, who is also said to have given his career-best performance to date.

Timothee Chalamet-led Marty Supreme is loosely inspired by Marty Reisman, a champion table tennis player. The film's official logline reads:

"Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness."

The movie is said to be the most expensive project by A24 so far, surpassing Alex Garland's Civil War (2024), starring Kirsten Dunst as a war photojournalist named Lee Smith. As per Deadline reports, some sources close to production say that it is more like a fictionalized original and not a biopic.

Marty Reisman was also the proponent of the traditional hardball style, so let's see if Timothee Chalamet pulled that one off. The film's trailer is available, and you can watch it on YouTube.
