The makers of Digger finally announced its title to the public. It was untitled for the longest time. A 49-second-long video was launched for this announcement. The video begins with someone dropping a shovel on the ground. That person then starts dancing while carrying the shovel. In the next frame, he is seen shaking a leg on the edge of a railing. It then concludes with the title appearing on screen.

The film features Tom Cruise as the titular Digger Rockwell. Other cast members include,

  • Sandra Hüller
  • Pip Torrens
  • John Goodman
  • Michael Stuhlbarg
  • Burn Gorman
  • Jesse Plemons
  • Sophie Wilde
  • Riz Ahmed
  • Emma D'Arcy
  • Robert John Burke

Cruise and G. Iñárritu have also produced the film with Mary Parent. Its production banners include Legendary Pictures, TC Productions, and M Productions. The film is shot by Emmanuel Lubezki, while Conor O'Neill is the editor. Reports suggest that the story revolves around a global figure who is trying to convince everyone that he is their savior.

At the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, the director was asked if there would be stunts in his film, given that it stars Tom Cruise.

"The only thing I will tell you, and don’t tell anybody, is that it’s nothing of that. I’m so excited. It was an incredible experience with Tom, Sandra Huller, Jesse Plemmons, with Riz Ahmed, but it’s a character driven film mounted on the shoulders of Tom which I knew he was exactly the right person."

He then spoke briefly about the film's plot.

"No, the thing that I can tell you. This is a wild comedy of catastrophic proportions. It’s insane. He makes me laugh every day. The range that I discovered working with Tom is unprecedented for me as a director. I was so f*cking impressed and happy."

Iñárritu's earlier film was Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, which was released in 2022. The Mexican dark dramedy was made in the Spanish language.
