4. Varsity Blues (1999)

Varsity Blues is an exploration of the intense culture of high school football in Texas, told through the lives of struggling players under the tyranny of a coach. James Van Der Beek plays Jonathan "Mox" Moxon, a backup quarterback who surprisingly finds himself the team's leader. The film criticizes the toxic win-at-all-costs mentality while also celebrating the camaraderie of the players. It's both sports drama and teen rebellion thanks to Jon Voight as the oppressive coach, memorable as he is.
