Last year turned out to be freaking good for filmgoers, with movies like Zootopia 2, Weapons, Thunderbolts* (now The New Avengers), and more restoring the faith in stories amidst the mass churning of content from streaming giants. The global box office did well too, going past $8 billion. The same is expected this year.

There's always a flux of highly anticipated films every year, but 2026 has something special. There's a Christopher Nolan movie coming, and we can always expect a cinematic spectacle from the director.

A couple of films based on video games are on the cards too, which fans need to keep an eye on. Video game film adaptations have been rapidly growing while also exploding at the box office, which wasn't the case before. So we can expect these two to do the same.

Keeping all that in mind, we’ve rounded up a selection of upcoming movies that cinephiles should definitely keep an eye on this year. Let’s take a look.

Movies coming out in 2026

7. Cold Storage

The comedy horror film is a must-watch, especially after Stranger Things ended with a bang. Joe Keery, who played Steve Harrington on the show, is coming back again to fight off another strange phenomenon where a parasitic fungus is taking over the world. He is joined by Liam Neeson and Georgina Campbell in it.

6. Street Fighter

One of the highly anticipated video game movies is Street Fighter, which dropped a teaser introducing the characters appearing in it. Some of the names in it include Jason Momoa as Blanka, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Andrew Koji as Ryu, and more.

5. Dune: Part Three

Dune: Part Three is sure as hell going to be one of the biggest films of the year, because it will conclude Denis Villeneuve's trilogy. The first two movies were adaptations of the first book in Frank Herbert's novel, and this one is an adaptation of the second book, Dune Messiah.

4. Resident Evil

Another one of the video game films you want to watch is another remake of Resident Evil. To this date, no director has gotten the horror game's film adaptation quite right, but given it's coming from Weapons (2025) director Zach Cregger, expect something spooky and interesting.

3. Project Hail Mary

Ryan Gosling is going on a space adventure with this film. But there's a twist: when he opens his eyes on this expedition, he will not have any memory of himself. The issue here is that he is out there saving the world, which can make things a little dramatic.

2. Avengers: Doomsday

If you are thinking about what's going to be the biggest box office blockbuster, then it will probably be Avengers: Doomsday. Though it is releasing on the same day as Dune: Part Three, it shouldn't affect its box office earnings, as it is bringing back quite a number of Marvel characters that we have loved seeing over the years.

1. The Odyssey

Maybe Avengers: Doomsday is going to be the biggest box office film, but The Odyssey is certainly going to be one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. This is Nolan's first outing in a mythical land, and we have to see how he pulls this one off.
