The malfunctioning Buzz Lightyear action figures might be the new antagonists in Pixar's upcoming animated film Toy Story 5, according to DiscussingFilm.

Buzz Lightyear started his Toy Story journey on a rough note since he was jealous of other toys like Woody, famously voiced by Tom Hanks. He believed that he was a real space range, not a toy, which led to some conflicts with the other toys. However, they eventually overcame their differences and turned the film series into a fan-favorite affair.

With Toy Story 5, an army of Buzz Lightyear figures, stuck in a malfunctioning play mode, is expected to be the villains. However, Buzz might not be the primary villain in the story. The fifth installment is also expected to shake things up in another way to address the contemporary world, where kids do not play with toys as much as they used to.

What else do we know about Toy Story 5?

The Toy Story film series began three decades ago. The time is also reflected in the kind of movies that were being made. Over time, the world has become increasingly fast-paced, and so has the media landscape, whether it's films or television.

Pixar's CCO Pete Docter addressed it during his March 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He said,

"If you go back and look at Bambi - I’m picking an extreme that’s kind of intentionally slow because it is about nature and watching the changes in seasons and things - I think films have definitely sped up. Even from Toy Story one to Toy Story 4, the level of visual sophistication, including the pacing, we’re just trying to keep in touch with the rhythms of the world, and it’s definitely faster."

Docter further spoke about the work in progress for Toy Story 5, being written and co-directed by Andrew Stanton,

"So I will say Toy Story 5, I think [writer and director] Andrew’s done a really great job of letting moments breathe in unexpected ways. Things that [make you think], Wait, is this a Toy Story movie?, with some of his choices, which I think we need at this point. We’ve had four of ’em already. We got to keep people surprised, so it’s going to be fun."

Later, Tim Allen, who has voiced Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story movies, spoke about Toy Story 5 in his April 2025 interview with WIVB. Here's what he said, as per Deadline,

“I can tell you that it’s a lot about Jessie. Tom [Hanks] and I do - Woody and I - do realign. And there’s an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyears. I can give you that, but I can’t give you much more.”

Toy Story 5 is slated to be released in the US theaters on June 19, 2026.
