Jared Leto portrayed the popular Batman villain, Joker, in the 2016 film Suicide Squad. This villain is widely recognized for his distinctive, often maniacal, laugh. This laugh is a prominent feature of his character, and Jared Leto once revealed how he tried to master the Joker's laugh in the movie.
While speaking to Conan O'Brien on TBS, Jared Leto was asked about his process of mastering the laugh of his character in the movie. The actor mentioned,
"I tried a lot of different laughs out on the streets of New York and Toronto."
The actor discussed how he was trying to nail the laughter because it was such an important part of this villain's personality.
Let us find out what more Jared Leto revealed about his process to ace the laugh in Suicide Squad.
"There was a lot of pressure," said the Suicide Squad star Jared Leto about mastering the Joker's laugh
Back in 2016, the renowned television host and actor Conan O'Brien had invited the cast of Suicide Squad to his show, at the Season 6 of Conan on TBS.
In Episode 114, along with Jared Leto, the cast of the film was present, including Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Cara Delevingne, Viola Davis, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jai Courtney, Karen Fukuhara, Adam Beach, and Jay Hernandez.
During the show, when Conan O'Brien had asked Jared Leto about his process as well as the challenges of mastering the laugh in the film, the actor stated,
"Because the Joker's laugh is an iconic thing, so there was a lot of pressure."
Then Jared Leto has talked about one laugh that he created while practicing it, as he further mentioned,
"I had one that I knew wasn’t right. It was kind of like, ‘He-he-he-he."
Then Leto had proceeded to make a laugh that sounded shy and, well, funny. The entire cast and the audience burst out laughing. Upon which Conan O'Brien playfully began copying that laugh in a more exaggerated manner, creating a bleating sound. He had mentioned the laugh to be like a 'shy debutante'.
Karen Fukuhara, who essayed the role of Tatsu Yamashiro a.k.a. Katana in the film, was then asked by Conan O'Brien about whether Leto's laugh really bothered her. Upon which, Fukuhara stated,
"Yeah, well, whenever I met Jared, he never broke character."
She then proceeded to mention how Jared Leto would greet her with an evil laugh, in a very Joker-esque manner.
The Joker's laugh has been iconic as well as a prime aspect in the characterization of the supervillain. Actors who have portrayed this character, be it Heath Ledger or Joaquin Phoenix, have incorporated their own unique ways of making the laugh. The villain's laugh is a mix of evilry and sadism, as well as reflects the character's vulnerability. It is part of Joker's identity.
Suicide Squad, helmed by David Ayer, was released nine years ago. The film followed a group of DC Comics villains who are recruited to perform dangerous missions for the government in exchange for reduced prison sentences. Upon its release, the film had garnered critical reviews. It has a rating of 5.9/10 at the IMDb and an aggregate of 26% at Rotten Tomatoes.
