The Apprentice wins the best movie award at the prestigious Canadian Screen Awards. Along with that, actor Sebastian Stan also wins the best actor award for his embodiment of U.S. President Donald Trump in the film.

Helmed by Ali Abbasi, this film takes a closer look at the earlier life of Donald Trump. The film primarily explores the plot of how Trump paved his way from being a businessman to becoming the US President, all enabled by the help of Roy Cohn.

Its synopsis, as per Rotten Tomatoes, goes as follows:

"A young Donald Trump (Sebastian Stan), eager to make his name as a hungry second son of a wealthy family in 1970s New York, comes under the spell of Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong), the cutthroat attorney who would help create the Donald Trump we know today. Cohn sees in Trump the perfect protégé -- someone with raw ambition, a hunger for success, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to win."

The 2024 film The Apprentice has been honoured with the Best Motion Picture award at the Canadian Screen Awards. Along with this film, here are the films that were nominated in the category:

The Apprentice has been produced by the helmer Ali Abbasi, and has been joined by Daniel Bekerman, Ruth Treacy, Jacob Jarek, Julianne Forde, and Louis Tisné. As per The Hollywood Reporter, Daniel Bekerman speaks on the stage of the event by stating:

“our movie shows how the young Donald Trump amassed wealth and power by finding a dilapidated building and slapping his name on it as president. We’ll see how that works out.”

Bekerman then further adds while shedding light on the creative and political responsibility artists have in the film industry. His statement continues:

“Now he wants to slap his name on this country. This is a challenge, but a good challenge, because as independent filmmakers and storytellers, what we need to do, what is our responsibility, is to tell stories with honesty that can build trust and build community."

He also talks about how encouraging it is to witness the success of indigenous and queer films. He also mentions the importance of artists to challenge the status quo, as he mentions:

"The rise of indigenous cinema in this country gives me hope. The rise of queer cinema in this country gives me hope. But we’re faced with power structures that want to silence us. It’s time to lock arms,”

And lastly, Daniel Bekerman concluded his statement by speaking out to Ali Abbasi, as he states:

“But Ali, I told you, you have to come to Canada if you want to find some guts in this industry,”

This Golden Globe and Oscar-nominated film takes a counterbalanced perspective on the life of Trump. In The Apprentice, the viewers shall witness both a critical as well as a humane perspective towards his life journey and choices.

However, Donald Trump has expressed his condemnation of the film. His team had even intimidated the makers of the film that they would take legal action against the film.

The Apprentice was released in the United States on 11th October, 2024. It was also showcased at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. During the film screening at the festival, the film was honoured with a standing ovation that lasted for a duration of eight minutes.
