A new horror movie is in town: A24's Undertone. The Canadian horror movie has been the talk of the internet for at least a year. Ian Tuason, a filmmaker also from Canada, has directed the movie. Now that the movie is distributed by A24, the horror movie has a chance to attract more than just niche horror fans. The movie has a chance to attract the die-hard cinephiles as well.

A24 released a 2:18 trailer for the Ian Tuason-directed horror movie this Thursday.

Yes, Undertone will be released in the theaters on March 13, 2026. Not much is known about the movie, as the marketing campaign has been sparse. But it did get a major boost at the Fantasia Film Festival in July last year. Critic and Fantasia Fest programming director Carolyn Mauricette described the horror movie like this:

“Fans of SKINAMARINK and I AM THE PRETTY THING WHO LIVES IN THE HOUSE will love this slow-burn nightmare that will make hackles on your neck rise and your blood chill.”

The movie was also awarded the Gold Audience Award at Fantasia. One of the movie's Executive Producers, Chad Archibald, celebrated the movie's win on Instagram with a post and caption reading:

"The Undertone wins the Gold Audience Award at Fantasia! We couldn’t be more excited about the response for this film. This is @blackfawnfilms 4th Fantasia award and the first of many for this insanely terrifying film. Thank you everyone who came out and voted. You made this happen and we are so so so grateful for you."

A few weeks later, in August, it seemed that the movie was up for bidding, in which A24 emerged victorious. Ian Tuason celebrated this news:

"A24!!!!!! DREAMS DO COME TRUE!!! This is REAL!! @blackfawnfilms @slaterverse @kinomakesmovies @blackfawndistro @iantuason and the legendary A24!!!!! THE UNDERTONE!!! The last two weeks have been the craziest of our lives!!!"

The trailer released today is focused exclusively on Nina Kiri's Evy, a podcaster who hosts the ‘all-things-creepy’ podcast. She is described as a skeptic who moves in with her dying mother to take care of her dying mother. One day, she receives ten audio files that play the recording of some people experiencing something paranormal.

As the trailer proceeds further, we see Evy experience unnatural events in her surroundings. The trailer culminates with something appearing right behind Evy as the latter is looking towards the camera.

Who stars in the horror movie?

One of the confirmed details about the movie is that Evy will be the only character to appear on screen. We can only hear other characters and voices off-screen. Here are some of the confirmed actors:

  • Nina Kiri: Evy
  • Michèle Duquet: Mama
  • Sarah Beaudin: Abby
  • Kris Holden-Ried: Justin
  • Jeff Yung: Mike
  • Brian Quintero: Dr. Ram
  • Keana Lyn Bastidas: Jessa
"The Undertone follows the host of an ‘all-things-creepy’ podcast, who moves into her dying mother’s house to be her primary caregiver. When her podcast is sent 10 audio recordings of a young pregnant couple experiencing paranormal noises, she realizes the woman’s story is a mirror of her own and each new recording scratches at her sanity, drawing her into a fate she cannot escape."

Mark your calendars for this March.
