Jason Bourne may return soon for another spycraftian operation as Universal acquires the rights to the franchise from Robert Ludlum's estate in perpetuity. The studio has been a key distributor behind the film franchise while also serving as a co-producer on a few projects. The latest update offers it all the rights to Ludlam's novels, according to Deadline.
Apart from the gritty spy thrillers, NBCUniversal will also hold the rights to Robert Ludlum's Treadstone novel series. The update comes a few months after reports about it parting ways and the estate seeking a new home to reboot the franchise. Considering the latest report, Universal will be involved in the franchise's future in a bigger capacity than before.
After this announcement, the executor of Ludlum's estate, Jeffrey Weiner, also the CEO of Captivate Entertainment, shared a statement, saying:
“We are thrilled that the Bourne franchise will remain at Universal. We look forward to working with the Universal team to expand the Bourne franchise across Universal’s varied platforms.”
Peter Cramer, the Universal Pictures president, said,
“Since its debut in 2002, the iconic Bourne franchise has reshaped the spy genre with groundbreaking films that set new standards for cinematic action. We’re energized to continue expanding the Bourne universe into the future with exciting new stories for global audiences.”
Is there any Jason Bourne movie in the works?
There are no official reports of a new Jason Bourne franchise installment being in development.
However, Deadline recently spoke about the talks of a film potentially in development with Edward Berger (Coclave, All Quiet on the Western Front) set to direct the project with Joe Barton (Black Doves, Giri/Haji) writing the screenplay, and Matt Damon expected to reprise his role as the titular spy. According to the publication, it hasn't been greenlit so far.
Their latest report states that producer Frank Marshall will continue being a key voice behind the franchise. With the new deal, the IP will also be expanded across different fronts, including merchandise and video games, with Jason Bourne being the central theme. There's also a theme park at work, dubbed "The Bourne Stuntacular," as per Deadline.
