Unknown Number: The High School Catfish is a recent documentary offering from Netflix. The Skye Borgman directorial was released on the streamer on August 29, 2025. Here's the official synopsis as per Letterboxd:
A teenage girl and her boyfriend become the targets of relentless harassment from an anonymous phone number. As authorities dig deeper, they uncover a secret that challenges everything they originally believed about the case.
The documentary chronicles the case of Lauryn Licari, who received hundreds of threatening messages on her phone for a few years. Let's find out where she is now and more about her.
Unknown Number: Where is Lauryn Licari Now?
Unknown Number chronicles the real-life story of Lauryn Licari and her boyfriend, Owen McKenney, who started receiving threatening messages on the phone in 2020. Lauryn was 13 years old when she started getting those messages that mostly said that Owen didn't like her anymore. The intensity of the messages progressively became intense as time went by.
Lauryn and Owen ended up parting ways in the hope that the messages would stop. However, the messages kept coming, and this time, they asked her to take her own life. She received around 40-50 messages per day, and most of them were either abusive, threatening, or s*xually suggestive.
The authorities intervened, and the FBI eventually traced the number to Kendra Licari, Lauryn's mother, in December 2022. This revelation shocked everyone, including Lauryn. Kendra was charged with stalking a minor and other similar charges.
She ended up pleading guilty to the stalking charges and was sent to jail. Kendra revealed that she was using an application that mimicked different phone numbers. Throughout the interview, Kendra blamed her abusive childhood as the reason for the way she reacted. However, the makers believe that she wanted Lauryn to ask for her help and was willing to hurt her in the process.
Lauryn said that she was initially shocked, which then turned into sadness. Towards the end of Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, it is revealed that Lauryn is planning to study the subject of criminology in college. The incident brought her closer to her father, Shawn. He currently has her complete custody.
Director Skye Borgman says in Unknown Number: The High School Catfish:
"She is at the beginning of figuring out that she can be the one in charge, that she can make all the decisions for herself and for her relationship with her mother. I think that’s going to be a really interesting place for Lauryn to explore."
The maker also revealed that Lauryn wanted to connect with her mother initially during the documentary shoot in 2023. In August 2024, they started shooting once again after Kendra was out of prison. This time, Borgman noticed that Lauryn had changed her perception of her mother and was more cautious. The two can't see each other as of now, but Lauryn wishes to meet her mother.
