“Val was busy coming toward me”: Kevin Spacey pays tribute to Val Kilmer at his Lifetime Achievement award acceptance speech

Kevin Spacey was missing his lifelong friend Val Kilmer, who recently passed away earlier this year at the age of 65, at the Septimius Awards, where he won the lifetime achievement award. For his, he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter,

"I am thinking of Val tonight. I am missing Val for all that he taught me, for the times that we shared together, but mostly for what he learned as a man, as a father and as a friend. I recall with enormous love in my heart that in 2017, when a number of people were walking away from me, Val was busy coming toward me, sending love and his support, and I will never forget him for that."

Val Kilmer died of pneumonia, while other factors also contributed. Following the news, several industry names, including Michael Mann, Francis Ford Coppola, Tom Cruise, and more, gave their tributes to the actor.

His last film was the sequel to Top Gun (1986), the film that helped him rise to stardom.

The actors weren't seen together in a film or a TV series but they sure were attached to a couple of projects. One was a movie and the other was a documentary about a group of California high schoolers.

The movie is called Columbus Day (2008), where Val Kilmer played John Cologne. It was about a thief who has one day to fix a mess he created during a heist. While Kevin Spacey wasn't in the movie, he was attached as a co-producer.

On the other hand, the documentary is called Shakespeare High (2011), and its synopsis (via IMDb) reads,

"An inspiring documentary that follows a diverse group of California high school students as they compete in a Shakespeare Festival unlike any you have ever seen. This unique program counts many of Hollywood's biggest stars among its alumni and alumnae."

Kevin Spacey and Val Kilmer appeared as themselves in it.

Though they didn't act together, they were friends since childhood and studied at Chatsworth High School, in the San Fernando Valley, together.

If you've seen Kevin Spacey acting in the movies, especially when we talk about films like The Usual Suspects (1995), one of the finest out there, you know that he is one of the finest actors in the industry. However, that wasn't the case in the beginning, but this is something that'll give many aspiring actors some hope.

Val Kilmer gave an interview to the Esquire magazine, where, while talking about his friend, he said that he is a

"Proof that you can learn how to act. Because he was horrible when he first started, and now he’s so good."

The actor was recently seen in films including Peter Five Eight, The Contract (both 2024), and 1780 (2025). He will next be seen in Holiguards Saga — The Portal of Force and The Awakening, both of which don't have a release date yet.
