The Velma Awards have officially returned in 2025 to highlight LGBTQ+ representation in kids and family programming. The 2025 ceremony is the second year of the awards. Notably, Velma Awards organizers say the number of eligible titles dropped nearly 40 percent from the inaugural year. It is worth noting that the Velma Awards do not function like general entertainment ceremonies. There are no nominees and hence no competition. Only winners are named.Velmas recognize the writers, animators, showrunners, and creative leaders who make content for LGBTQ+ kids. Co-founder Jeremy Blacklow stated,"This year, celebrating these victories is not just important, it is urgent. These creators are not simply making content. They are holding ground on behalf of a generation of queer youth." The 2025 winners remind us that representation is not an extra, it’s a lifeline."The post continued:"These shows and leaders did not just entertain, they carved out space for young LGBTQ+ viewers to see themselves, their families, and their futures reflected with joy and authenticity. 📉 With nearly 40% fewer eligible titles this year, celebrating these wins is more essential than ever. We refuse to let queer stories vanish. 📢 Join us in honoring the creators who continue to push children’s media forward, not despite the cultural climate, but because of it. ❤️💛💚💙💜"The Velma Awards are presented by The Rainbow Project.
