Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is just out and is still pretty fresh in people's minds. But it has already paved the way for conversations about the future of the franchise. The third Benoit Blanc mystery is now considered as the best one yet. So people are already asking 'the' question. Is there going to be another Knives Out movie after this? Recent comments from Rian Johnson clarify this for us all. It's already shaping up behind the scenes.
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is an important chapter in the franchise because it proves that it can keep getting better. Johnson knows what he is doing and is meticulous when it comes to deciding the killer in each film. He knows the right ingredients required to make a good mystery. That is why fans trust that the franchise can continue without feeling repetitive. Johnson has always treated each instalment as a standalone story. And that mindset is still guiding him.
Rian Johnson writes and directs the Knives Out movies. He has been open about how much he values creative curiosity. He does not rush these stories. Waiting for the right idea to click before committing to it is how he goes about it. Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery - What Rian Johnson revealed about Knives Out 4
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery has exceeded expectations and also built new ones. Rian Johnson is in the spotlight. And naturally, conversations are drifting towards what comes next. In an interview with Esquire, Johnson has shared that another Benoit Blanc mystery is definitely happening. However, there is a "but":
"Oh, yeah! But I should probably do something else next. Something a little different."
His mind is on a “paranoid thriller” and a “sci-fi adjacent” next. The details of these are still under wraps. The Knives Out 4 movie idea is also not a concrete one yet. It is still in its preliminary stage.
Johnson is about not forcing the franchise forward. He wants to feel genuinely excited by the idea first. That approach went into Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery as well. It was written only after he found a story worth telling.
In the same interview with Esquire, he shares:
"I know that Hollywood is a place where the sky has been falling since day one. All you can try to do is good work, which sounds really dumb. There will always be people like Paul Thomas Anderson and Guillermo del Toro and Luca Guadagnino who are doing interesting stuff that manages to poke through the cracks in the concrete.”
Johnson has made it clear that he plans to take a break from Benoit Blanc after Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. He wants to work on something original before returning to the world of Knives Out.
One thing, however, is certain. We will get another Knives Out movie with Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc solving impossible crimes with his outlandish accent.
