In an interview with Formula 1, when Brad Pitt was asked if his character in F1 The Movie was based on any particular incident from real life, the actor said:
"No, I mean we came at this with such a love for the sport, a love for the drivers, the history of the sport, you know. We drew from a lot of, I mean, you can probably pinpoint if you, you know, looking back through this happened in '94 and this happened in '08 and this, and we were drawing from all of it."
He added:
"We need to get right to the edge of the rules to be competitive in any way. That's where Sonny starts out and is rather disliked because of it."
As per MotorSport, Brad Pitt referred to the 2008 Renault Formula One crash controversy as a reference. Race driver Nelson Piquet reportedly helped teammate Fernando Alonso to win by intentionally crashing his Renault car. Legal action was initiated against the company, as it was revealed to be a pre-mediated plan to benefit Alonso.

"Do you know Alex Albon said something to me? He said, "Even the way he puts his earplugs in, that's how we do it. It's like you'd really studied the drivers"
Upon which, Brad Pitt responded by saying:
"I guess some things you absorb from watching it a lot cause it was never a conscious thought."
