Joseph Kosinski's F1 The Movie presented a stunning, dramatized version of the sport that has captivated the world for decades. Featuring Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes and his fictional APXGP team, the film incorporated all the real elements of the sport.

From cameos by actual F1 drivers to filming during real Grand Prix weekends, the movie closely resembled an actual race one might see at a racing circuit. However, one scene in the film took a significant step back in time to make it as authentic as possible. Yes, we're talking about Damon Idris' Joshua Pearce's accident.

Kosinski told GQ that the scene was inspired by a Formula Three incident and Romain Grosjean's fiery crash in 2020, during which he was trapped for half a minute and survived with only minor burns. His statement read,

"[The crash was] about ten years ago, where a car hit a sausage turn off Parabolica, which is an infamous corner with a lot of accidents over history. We shot it practically. The rig involved a rail, along which a prop car was launched using compressed air, reaching 110 miles per hour. They only had two takes to get the shot. The first take, it landed 20 feet short. It didn't make it to the tire wall."

He continued,

It's better to overachieve than underachieve. Go for it. We shot the car way further than we expected. It was supposed to hit the sign and the fencing. As you saw in the movie, it went over, into the woods, and crashed. Luckily, one of my camera operators had the state of mind to actually follow it, and get it.

The scene is a crucial one in the film, as it highlights the dangers that can occur on racing tracks. It's also an important plot point in the movie as it brings Pearce down, and he has to take a break from racing.
