Michael Douglas and Brenda Vaccaro first met in the American drama Summertree, which was released on June 9, 1971.

Michael starred as Jerry McAdams, a 20-year-old University dropout whose attempt to escape the military draft was unsuccessful. On the other hand, Brenda Vaccaro played the role of Vanetta, a married nurse ready to embrace love once again following a two-year separation from her partner, Tony.

The duo started their affair immediately after the release of "Summertree" and moved to the Golden City (California) together.

“To come to California together to experience all that stuff. He got his first show, ‘The Streets of San Francisco.’ We were so excited. It was like, ‘Wow, you know, we left New York and came to California and everything that was supposed to happen happened.'" Brenda said.

In a 2017 interview with the British magazine Closer, Brenda gave more insights regarding the seven-year romance with the Academy-winning actor, stating that they had a "hippie wedding" during which they exchanged vows and promised to be together forever. Unfortunately, it was short-lived when the former developed feelings for Actor-Singer Donald Lee Stroud, aka Don Stroud.

She revealed to Closer:

"Then we decided to have a “hippie wedding” at my agent’s house. We said vows that we loved each other and would be together forever. Finally, it came time to say that we were doing it for real. I said, “Yes,” then wound up backing out of it. I really messed that one up.”
She continues, "I fell madly in love with someone else, [actor] Don Stroud. There was this really strong connection—spiritually and sexually—and so overpowering I could not handle it."

The Brooklyn-born actress proceeds to tell Closer about her regrets about calling off the relationship with Douglas and recalls when her close friend Robert Shaw advised her not to.

"My dear friend Robert Shaw, who was making Jaws, told me what I was doing was rash and I was making a mistake — that momentary pleasures like the one with Don would lead to lasting regrets if I broke up with Michael,” she explained. She adds, "Turns out Robert was right."
