Zach Cregger's Weapons became the year's surprise horror hit with a staggering $264 million box office collection and positive reviews worldwide. Starring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin in the lead roles, the film explores a strange occurrence that happens in a small town, where seventeen children disappear overnight, except for one.

Although the film ends without any cliffhangers, fans have discussed the origins of Weapon's antagonist, a witch called Aunt Gladys. Soon enough rumors of a prequel being under work started surfacing, and Cregger has now confirmed that he's working on a film about the witch's backstory.

In an interview with Fangoria, Cregger talked about the film's success and how he already had an idea for a prequel as he said,

“It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it. There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not b*****it. I was ready. I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.”

Further talking about his feelings on the immense popularity Weapons received he added,

“It doesn’t feel real. Look, it feels great. I don’t know how else to describe it. I kind of can’t let myself basque too much because then somehow I feel like the universe is just going to take it away. But I couldn’t be more happy with how Weapons has turned out. I’m so proud of it.”

What is Weapons about?

In the quiet town of Maybrook, Pennsylvania, seventeen third-grade children vanish in the dead of night, leaving only Alex Lilly behind. The town spirals into fear and suspicion, blaming the kids' teacher Justine Grandy for the disappearance. Pushed into isolation and a downward spiral of alcohol and regret, Justine starts making her own investigations, leading her to Alex.

On the other hand, Archer Graff, one of the fathers refuses to put more faith in the police and starts his own investigation. Piecing together security footage, he notices all the children's paths moving towards one place: Alex's house. More interference from more people, including a police officer and a drug addict turned thief, a web of mystery surfaces that all lead to Alex's house and further investigations reveal a painful, horrifying truth.

Alex's parents, and the seventeen children are trapped in a catatonic state inside the house, under the spell of Aunt Gladys, a relative of Alex's mother who is a witch. She wields dark magic that drains life and bends minds as she manipulates their actions and makes them act as her pawns. With the life she drains from them, she keeps herself alive and healthy.

After the film's release, many raised more questions about Gladys' past. Where did she come from? What were her motives? Why did she choose the Lilly family to put them under her spell. Thankfully, these are questions that fans can now hope will be answered, as Cregger works on the film's prequel and Gladys' origins.
