Werwulf is a forthcoming project by Robert Eggers, who is known for making films in the horror genre. The director's recent outing was the period horror flick Nosferatu starring Lily-Rose Depp and Aaron Taylor-Johnson among others. The vampire film was released on December 25, 2024. Depp and Aaron are set to reunite with Eggers for the above-mentioned title.
The film is reportedly about a werewolf, which is not surprising given Eggers' track record of delving into the supernatural. Let's take a closer look at the details of this upcoming film by Eggers.
Lily-Rose Depp to reunite with Robert Eggers for Werwulf
Variety has reported that Robert Eggers is working on a werewolf horror film called Werwulf. The film will mark his reunion with Nosferatu actor Lily-Rose Depp and Aaron-Taylor Johnson. Eggers has written the script with Sjón and will also direct it. He collaborated with Sjón on his 2022 period action film, The Northman.
Taylor-Johnson will play the werewolf in this film, set in 13th-century England. Werwulf is expected to be released during Christmas of 2026. It will be produced by Eggers, Sjón, Eric Fellner, and Tim Bevan under their Working Titles banner. Eleanor Columbus and Chris Columbus will serve as executive producers.
Eggers' earlier film, Nosferatu, was a remake of the 1922 black-and-white horror film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. The film starred Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson among others. Set in the 1830s, the film centers on the namesake vampire, who becomes increasingly obsessed with a young lady. Focus Features released it on December 25, 2024, and it met with a positive critical response. The film ultimately grossed $181.3 million at the box office.
Eggers started his directorial career in 2015 with the horror film The Witch. It was followed by the 2019 psychological horror film The Lighthouse and the 2022 film The Northman. All his films are set in a certain period. In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, the director spoke about it and shared that he is not interested in setting his stories in modern times.
“The idea of having to photograph a car makes me ill and the idea of photographing a cellphone is just death. And to make a contemporary story you have to photograph a cellphone — it’s just how life is — so no.”
Looking at his track record as a storyteller, it's sufficient to say that fans will be excited about Werwulf. The filmmaker is expected to ensure that the dialogues in his films are right for the period, and the outfits also resemble those of the time. Meanwhile, Aaron-Taylor Johnson was recently seen in Danny Boyle's zombie horror film 28 Years Later. Lily-Rose Depp's most recent outing was Nosferatu, and she will next be seen in a sci-fi comedy film called Alpha Gang.
