Comedian Amy Sedaris has reportedly sparked backlash online after making a joke on CNN's New Year's Eve broadcast.

According to reports, the incident occurred during the news channel’s broadcast at Times Square on December 31 which Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper co-hosted. Sedaris was asked the best place to meet a man in 2026. However her reply left the hosts speechless. According to the viral clips online, she said

“Oh, where’s a good place to meet a man? I’d say the ladies’ room.”

She then repeated the question and answered maybe “Bergdorf’s” before turning the question to Cohen and Cooper, who exchanged confused glances at her response. She then concluded her answer by stating that “a fire station” would be the right place.

Amy Sedaris' response was met with intense backlash online, with many labelling it as “transphobic”, while others predicted that she might not return to the network.

Amy Sedaris transphobic joke sparks backlash online

Comedian Amy Sedaris has drawn sharp criticism towards her for her joke after she appeared as a guest alongside hosts Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen during CNN's New Year's Eve Live broadcast from Times Square on December 31.

She received polarized reactions online with significant backlash, while others referred to the joke as dark humor. Here is how the netizens reacted:

“Yes Amy then spoiled moment by immediately hiding under a trump derrangement joke you can find men at bergdoff store.” A user said criticizing her follow-up pivot to Bergdorf Goodman.
“Oh no, are they going to boycott Amy Sedaris the same way they boycotted Hogwart's Legacy It could have sold 40.16 million copies instead of just 40 million.” A user quipped.
“When your freak thoughts come out on live television.” A third added.
“This is how disconnected with reality these people are they can’t even say anything that’s remotely normal that was the most awkward clip I’ve seeen today” Another user opined.

However, some people praised the joke, taking it as a lighthearted moment shared between Amy Sedaris and the co-hosts.

“just another reminder that live TV is unpredictable and sometimes people say stuff that gets taken out of context.” A user said.
“It’s pretty funny. 2026 just be the year of relaxing and not acting like every word is made of knives…? Thanks.” Another agreed.
“Nothing wrong with what she said… it’s a jabbing joke and anyone offended needs to get a life in 2026 But yes alcohol and live tv don’t mix.” A user commented.
“Funny line. The whole transgender kerfuffle has been one missed punch line after another.” Someone said praising the joke.

Both Cooper and Cohen are openly g*y. Cohen came out as g*y to his parents at the age of 20. He first publicly admitted that about his identity during his appearance on Real Housewives of New Jersey reunion in 2009. He then made history as the first openly g*y host of Watch What Happens Live.

Cooper embraced his sexual identity in 2012 by sending an email to friend and writer Andrew Sullivan, permitting him to publish it on his Daily Beast blog. In the statement, he said:

“The fact is, I'm g*y, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.”

In later reflections, Cooper has called being g*y “one of the great blessings of my life.”

In addition to being a comedian, Sedaris is also an actress and a writer. She is best known for co-creating, co-writing and starring in the Comedy Central series, Strangers with Candy.

She has also worked as a voice artist, including the central role of Princess Carolyn in the Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman, Foxy Loxy in Chicken Little, and Cinderella in Shrek the Third.
