Chicago-based rapper Ann Marie has now reportedly responded to her viral video from 2020, which recently resurfaced online.

In the video, Marie, whose real name is Joann Marie Slate, is responding to a fight at her brother’s apartment. The police officers arrived at the residence on receiving complaints of them fighting. Their dispute allegedly emerged when her brother told her that she had HIV.

The old footage, which recently reemerged on the internet, led netizens to speculate if she is suffering from a sexually transmitted disease in real life. Responding to rumors, Ann Marie denied having HIV and took to her Instagram story on August 14, 2025. She said,

"Now Be Fr Y'll lake asf!!! Find Y'all somebody else to play with.”

The viral moment has drawn attention towards her past troubles, which include her December 2020 arrest. Here is what we know.

Why was Ann Marie arrested in December 2020?

In 2020, R&B singer Ann Marie was reportedly arrested for shooting a man in the head. According to a report in Essence, she was booked into a Fulton County jail on December 2, 2025.

The reports stated that on December 1, 2020, Marie called 911 from the InterContinental Buckhead Hotel in Buckhead, Atlanta, Georgia. She reported to the authorities that she accidentally shot her “best friend,” a 24-year-old man named Jonathan Wright. He was found semi-responsive and was immediately rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Although Ann Marie’s best friend survived the alleged accidental shooting, the police arrested her and charged her with two felonies, including possession of a firearm and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Narrating the incident to the police, Marie told the authorities that she shot him accidentally as she reached for a towel. She claimed that the gun fell and struck him in the head.

A report in Variety said that the police discovered two shell casings inside the hotel room from where Ann Marie made the call. They also found two projectiles, a bullet hole in the doorknob, and another in a cabinet.

She was released from prison a few days later with a $60,000 bond; however, she was put under house arrest. HotNewHipHop stated that she was sentenced to one year in prison and was released in late 2021.

In 2018, Ann Marie was arrested for driving without a valid license and speeding, as per HipHopdx.
