In a moving display of friendship and respect, Anthony Mackie recently gave an emotional farewell to his deceased friend Malcolm-Jamal Warner. Mackie shared his sentiments in a recent interview with PEOPLE, which was held as part of the promotional segment of Twisted Metal Season 2.
The death of Warner last month shocked everyone, and tributes continue to come in big numbers from all over the world. Anthony Mackie is the latest public figure to air his thoughts about the significant influence his late friend had on his own life and that of the entire society. While speaking about his connection with Warner, Mackie shared:
"I’m proud to say Malcom-Jamal Warner was a friend of mine. He’s somebody that I knew and spent time with, and just was such a beautiful human being. And every time I was around him, I was able to take full advantage of those conversations and that time. That, for me, is the most important thing"
Mackie has previously expressed his admiration for Malcolm Jamal Warner, as he strongly related to Warner’s character Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show. This relationship eventually evolved into a real friendship when they met in the entertainment industry.
Anthony Mackie also paid tribute to his friendship with Warner by wearing a knockoff designer shirt during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. This shirt was designed by Theo Huxtable's on-screen sister, who appeared on The Cosby Show, and went on to become a running joke due to its absurd design.
Anthony Mackie's statements
Malcolm-Jamal Warner was an experienced actor who had been in the industry long enough to act as a mentor to other younger actors, such as Mackie. While the actor has established himself as a leading figure in Hollywood, he strongly believes in the process of mentoring.
While speaking in the interview with PEOPLE, Anthony Mackie also paid his respects to another one of his mentor figures - Andre Braugher. The actor died of lung cancer in 2023, but his teachings are still something that Mackie treasures. He shared his thoughts on the late actor by saying:
"Being in New York and that new kid on the theater scene. To have those lessons and those moments and have that communicated [by] such — at that time for me — such an icon in the business. always tell people just take full advantage of those moments [with mentors] and truly be yourself so that that person can see, react and engage with who you are and not some fictitious idea of who you think they want you to be."
Mackie's thoughts were also echoed by co-star Stephanie Beatriz, who worked with Andre Braugher on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
While processing the loss of his friend, Anthony Mackie continues his professional journey with several significant upcoming projects. Once the promotional commitments around Twisted Metal have been sorted out, the actor will then be seen reprising his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday.
Apart from the aforementioned projects, Mackie is also working on other projects like Signal Hill and Monsanto, which are currently in development.
