Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning packed plenty of jaw-dropping moments, but what fans didn’t see might be just as thrilling. Director Christopher McQuarrie revealed there was supposed to be a post-credits scene. Yep, a little cinematic cherry on top that almost made the cut. So what exactly was this mysterious post-credit scene meant to show? Here’s what the director had to say.

In a recent interview with USA Today, McQuarrie said they were all set to shoot a final “coda.” But before filming, he gave Tom Cruise a sneak peek at the last ten minutes of Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, and apparently, it blew Cruise away, so much so that he immediately shut down the idea of shooting anything extra.

Speaking to the outlet, Quarrie revealed:

"I came to Tom and I said, 'Look, normally I would want you to see the whole movie before I showed this to you, but we're about to shoot this coda in a couple of days and just look at this bit.' He said, 'You know what, you can cancel Saturday's work because this is the end of the movie. This is it.'"

The scene remains shrouded in mystery. McQuarrie played coy and didn’t spill any detail, only hinting that it might show up in a future film. This raises the question: Are we really done here? Because if there’s one thing more enduring than Ethan Hunt’s ability to outrun explosions, it’s the franchise’s knack for resurrection. Maybe the mission isn’t quite over after all. Maybe Hunt will return soon after Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning isn’t just another high-octane entry in Tom Cruise’s long-running spy saga; it’s a cinematic farewell that might not be a farewell at all. Directed by franchise veteran Christopher McQuarrie and co-written with Erik Jendresen, the 2025 blockbuster packs legacy, loss, and ludicrous stunts into one explosive finale... or is it?

Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, is once again pulled into a global chaos, confronting a rogue AI known only as "The Entity." Yep, the villain isn’t human, it’s a digital threat buried inside a sunken Russian submarine, and Ethan’s the only one willing to go diving after it. Returning are ride-or-dies Benji (played by Simon Pegg), Grace (played by Hayley Atwell), and Luther (played by Ving Rhames), who all team up to keep the world from spiraling into tech-fueled mess.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning premiered at Cannes 2025 before hitting theaters on May 23, and while the runtime is chunky and the plot’s a bit of a brain-bender, fans and critics alike praised it for the adrenaline rush it gave them. The film is already a box office success, earning $204 million as of yet.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is now running in theaters.
