Elon Dershowitz’s passing has brought his parents' lives into the limelight, as people are wondering to know more details.
Who were Elon Dershowitz’s parents, Sue Barlach and Alan Dershowitz?
Elon Dershowitz’s father, Alan Dershowitz, was born on September 1, 1938, in an Orthodox Jewish household in Borough Park, Brooklyn. According to The New Yorker, at the yeshiva (Orthodox Jewish college), he was recognised as a wise man. His principal recommended that he become
“something where you use your mouth but don’t need much brains”.
His IMDb profile stated that he went on to become an actor and a writer. He is known for films such as Reversal of Fortune (1990), Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child (1995), and Kids' Court (1988).
He earned a bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College in 1959. He then went on to attend law school at Yale University. After his graduation, he served as a law clerk, first for David Bazelon, who was chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, according to Britannica.

As a lawyer, Alan represented several high-profile figures such as Jeffrey Epstein, Donald Trump, and O.J. Simpson.
Elon Dershowitz’s father married his mother, Sue Barlach, on June 21, 1959. She met Alan at a Jewish summer camp in the Catskills when they both were in high school. Barlach was from Bayonne, New Jersey. At the age of 19, she arrived in New Haven with Alan. In 1961, they welcomed their son, Elon. And in 1963, Barlach gave birth to Elon’s younger brother, Jamin.
Barlach and Dershowitz separated in the early 1970s and finalized their divorce in 1976. It was preceded by a contentious custody battle. In the court documents, Judge Haskell Freedman wrote that Dershowitz’s behavior toward Sue
“negatively affected the plaintiff’s health to the extent that she required medical treatment and, briefly, some psychiatric therapy”.
However, he denied mistreating her, and his son, Elon Dershowitz, claimed to have witnessed no such mistreatment. Sue Barlach was handed over the provisional custody of their children. But Dershowitz was eventually granted full custody of their kids. Sue started working as a research librarian for the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union before her death in 1983.
After their divorce, he married Carolyn Cohen in 1986. She was a psychologist who came to visit him in 1982 when he was giving a speech in Boston. They welcomed a daughter, Ella Dershowitz, in 1990.
