The original report about the accident reads:"The ATV and child were instantly submerged in the water right before their eyes. Within seconds the child’s mother, stepfather and other family members reached the pond, dove in and attempted to rescue the child to no avail. The child was trapped and secured by the seatbelt and the ATV’s safety netting. Within two minutes, Acadian Ambulance Services arrived and assisted in freeing the child from the cold waters."In a later interview with Better Together with Maria Menounos in 2020, Jamie Lynn Spears talked about the accident, sharing how she thought she had lost her kid after the first few minutes of the accident. She explained that Maddie was driving the ATV with every safety measure possible when the accident happened and then they rescued her, and thought they had lost her because she wasn't responding:"We dove in and we were able to rescue her. When we were finally able to get her out of the water ... and the first responders took from me, we thought she was gone. We thought we lost our daughter. That moment, I felt everything that you can feel, I think, as far as the worst. There's nothing worse than looking at your child and just feeling that you've failed her."Jamie Lynn Spears went on to elaborate, stating that she and her family argued for a priest to go into the ICU and bless her and that was when she first responded:"And I didn't want her to think that I couldn't save her... She wasn't responding to anything and so it was not looking good for us. He went to put the oil on her and read the rites and she sat up and started kicking, and her hands started grabbing at all the things. That was our first sign that she was there."She later stated that the loss of her daughter was her worst fear and she had faced it in her daughter's accident:"I've faced my worst fear now. What else can I mess up or do wrong that will be as horrible as that? Nothing. There's nothing. God gave me the blessing of giving me my daughter back. I lost her and I got her back."E!
