According to a report in The New York Times, Joan Kennedy’s only daughter, Kara Kennedy, died because of a heart attack, according to the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate in Boston. She was the first child of Ted and Joan Kennedy, who was born on February 27, 1960. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2002.
According to a report in ABC News, Dr. Sharonne N. Hayes said:
“Depending upon where the lung cancer was, her heart could have taken a direct hit.”
After her diagnosis in 2002, she was told it was inoperable. But later, she got a part of her right lung removed with her father’s help, who found a surgeon at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Kara Kennedy’s brother, Patrick, a former congressman from Rhode Island, said in a statement to the Associated Press that Kara loved to stay fit, but the cancer treatment “took a toll on her.” He added:
“Her heart gave out. She’s with Dad.”
Their father passed away in 2009 because of a brain tumor. He was 77 at that time.
Kara Kennedy appeared with her father during the 1980 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, according to a report in NBC News. His brother Ted Kennedy Jr. said:
“She implored dad to emphasize instead his primary strengths, which were his compassion and his willingness to fight for what he believed in, things that even his political opponents would agree with. She reminded him why he was in political life.”
While speaking to the Boston Globe, Joan said that Kara's death was “such a shock because she was in such good health,” saying:
“She swam I don’t know how many miles. She was in wonderful health.”
In 2005, Joan underwent surgery for breast cancer. Ted Jr. lost a leg to bone cancer at a young age, and Patrick underwent surgery in 1988 to remove a non-cancerous tumor that pressed against his spine.
