Late Canadian actor and comedian John Candy’s children, Jennifer Anne and Christopher Michael, recently co-produced a documentary titled John Candy: I Like Me in memory of their father.

The documentary will be released on Prime Video on September 10. During a live interview with Toronto-based news channel CTV News on September 4 ahead of the release, the siblings opened up about their father, his career, family life, and legacy.

Jennifer Anne Candy, who is an actress and producer, mentioned how “amazing” it was to make the documentary and see her father through “the eyes of other people” who admired and loved him as much as she and her brother did.

“He was human and he was our dad…” she noted, while Christopher Michael, who’s an actor-writer, shared that the documentary was a “swan song and a very beautiful goodbye.”

When asked how it was reliving the good old days with past clips of her father, Jennifer shared that it was a trip down “memory lane” and the experience was “cathartic.”

“It was just bringing up all these emotions and feelings of just watching ourselves, and grow up the way that we grew up, and, you know, with our dad and everything. And the whole process was amazing,” she added.

Her younger brother, Chris, added that this was the “perfect time” to share John Candy’s story, as they finally had a “better understanding” of his life and craft.

“This is… the one last great John Candy film that he gets to star in and we’re really happy about it,” Christopher stated.

Everything you need to know about John Candy’s daughter

Jennifer Anne Candy-Sullivan was born on February 3, 1980, in Toronto, Canada, to John Candy and his wife, Rosemary Margaret Hobor. She followed in the footsteps of her father and became an actress, stand-up comedian, and producer after graduating from Loyola Marymount University in 2002.

During college, she directed a stage adaptation of “Little Shop of Horrors” for the Del Rey Players drama group. Her father acted in the movie version of the same name.

Jennifer starred in the 2017 film In Vino and the TV series, Liv and Maddie (2013), According to Jim, and Where’s This Party? (2014), according to IMDb. She co-produced shows including Foreign Body, Cockpit, Sam Has 7 Friends, and Prom Queen.

She has been married to Bryan Sullivan since October 2012. They have a son named Finley John William Sullivan. Jennifer has 22.8K followers on Instagram.

In an August 2015 interview with Entertainment Tonight, John’s daughter mentioned that he was an “everyday kind of guy and a great dad and very lovable.” She added, “Very much similar to characters that he was on film.”

Around the same time, Jennifer unveiled the John Candy Box Theater in Toronto. She mentioned that being an actor and comedian is a big deal, as her dad is a “pretty big icon to kind of follow."

“So, I’ve given up on that train of going, ‘I want to be just like you,’ because I will never be just like him,” she added.

Jennifer, who is now a Los Angeles resident, also shared that her father often tried to dissuade her and Chris from pursuing a career in the entertainment field. But she was sure that he would have come around and “embraced” it eventually.

Candy died from a heart attack in his sleep in March 1994 at the age of 43 in Durango, Mexico, where he was shooting for his movie, Wagons East. In 2015, Jennifer called his death “gut-wrenching.”

John Candy: I Like Me was conceived in October 2022, according to People Magazine. Back then, the Candy family gave Ryan Reynolds’ production house, Maximum Effort, access to his home videos and archives. It was the opening movie at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on September 4.
