The Cosby Show actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner tragically died in an accidental drowning incident that took place on the afternoon of Sunday, July 20, 2025, at a beach in Cocles de Limón on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, according to CBS News.
He was pronounced dead by the staff of the Costa Rican Red Cross, and was 54 at the time of his death. He was best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on the classic American TV sitcom The Cosby Show, for which he earned the 38th Primetime Emmy Award nomination.
In addition to series, he also appeared in films. He made his feature‑film debut in the 1994 Paramount action thriller Drop Zone, in which he portrayed the brother of Wesley Snipes’ character.

He also played A.C. Cowlings, O.J. Simpson’s close friend in the 2016 series The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, a brief yet memorable role in the sitcom Community, and in Suits, where he portrayed Julius Rowe.
He worked in several genres, including the romantic action-comedy, Fool’s Gold, which also stars Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, and the indie drama Restaurant, in which Warner plays one of the central characters.
Malcom also played the supporting role in the legal thriller based on a novel by Robert Whitlow, The List, and the 2017 drama film, Shot.
His co-star, Tracee Ellis Ross, from the sitcom Reed Between the Lines, paid a deeply emotional tribute on Instagram, in which she wrote:
''I love you, Malcolm. First I met you as Theo with the rest of the world then you were my first TV husband. My heart is so so sad. What an actor and friend you were: warm, gentle, present, kind, thoughtful, deep, funny, elegant. You made the world a brighter place. Sending so much love to your family. I’m so sorry for this unimaginable loss.''
There has been no public statement from Warner’s family, representatives, or relatives regarding his passing so far.
