Former NFL quarterback and sports analyst Robert Griffin III is engaged in a war of words with Chicago Sky basketball player Angel Reese.
Griffin sparked controversy after he posted a tweet on July 10, 2025, on X. In his post, he condemned a racist meme that has been circulating online, depicting Reese as a monkey on a fake "NBA 2K26: WNBA Edition". He wrote:
“Whether you like a player or not, Angel Reese should never be called or depicted as a Monkey,” he said. “There should be no space for racism in this world.”
He added in his post that he stayed quiet initially since she shared a video which led to his family receiving death threats.
He further asserted that people from Reese’s inner circle had contacted him and confirmed his belief that she hates Caitlin Clark. He wrote:
“People in Angel’s inner circle called me and told me I was right and Angel Reese has grown to hate Caitlin Clark because of the media always asking her about Caitlin and being constantly compared to her.”
This prompted a response from Angel Reese. Here is what we know.
What did Angel Reese say in response to Robert Griffin III’s tweet about her “inner circle”?
Angel Reese took to X (formerly Twitter) to take a jibe at Robert Griffin III. The WNBA star accused him of fabricating the story for attention. She shared her response in a post on July 10, 2025, and wrote:
“Lying on this app when everybody knows the first and last name of everybody in my circle for clout is nastyyyy work.”
Continuing the heated argument, Robert Griffin III once again took to X, reiterating that he did speak to them. He said that he defended her not to “start a drama.” He wrote:
“I spoke up in support of Angel Reese against racism not to start drama. But I won’t let anyone twist the truth just because it’s inconvenient to them.”
He further added that her inner circle told him about her growing hatred towards Caitlin Clark.
“Instead of trying to check me, just tighten up your circle. They calling me and saying you hate Caitlin Clark, not the other way around.”
Robert Griffin III continued and said:
“I have zero interest in being the villain in anyone’s story. I just want to have fun, tell the truth and celebrate sports. But I won’t pretend or lie just to protect feelings.”
Robert Griffin III made his comments initially on the rivalry between Reese and Clark in May. The two got engaged in a spat during the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky game, following which Griffin shared a post on X, which read:
“After watching Caitlin Clark’s flagrant foul on Angel Reese and the aftermath, there is no way Angel Reese can continue the lie that she doesn’t dislike Caitlin Clark. I know what hatred looks like. Angel Reese HATES Caitlin Clark. Not some basketball rivalry hate either. Hate.”
Their rivalry began in college and has continued throughout their professional careers in the WNBA. It started from the 2023 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship game, per Fox News.
