Before Keanu Reeves stepped into the shoes of super-skilled assassin John Wick, which would bring a revolution in the action genre, he fended off demons and tried to make his way to heaven in Francis Lawrence's 2005 movie Constantine. Over the years, it has become a cult classic among the fans.
However, it never got a sequel, even after almost a couple of decades. Though the talks about it began a few years after the film's release. In a recent update, as reported by Deadline earlier this year, Keanu Reeves said,
"We’ve [along with director Francis Lawrence] been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘OK.’ So, we’re going to try and write a script."
As of now, there's no official announcement about the film's sequel, but this statement appears reassuring that we may soon get one.
How did Keanu Reeves' Constantine set up a sequel?

Movies based on comic books usually don't need to set up a sequel, as there is a barrage of stories that creators wanting to adapt as films can use. Still, Constantine has an ambiguous ending instead of just wrapping up things.
Keanu Reeves' titular John Constantine is suffering from a terminal type of cancer, and he is trying to buy one ticket to heaven. However, he is helping people and sending demons back to hell for selfish reasons.
Half-angel Gabriel (Tilda Swinton), whom Constantine addresses as half-breed, tells him that he cannot go to heaven because what he is doing doesn't count as sacrifice. However, tables are turned in the final moments of the film when Lucifer (Peter Stormare) arrives. For him, John is one soul he would come himself to collect and drag to hell.
However, he makes a bargain with Lucifer for Isabel (Rachel Weisz), who is in hell for the wrong reasons, and cuts his wrists. As soon as he makes this decision, he starts ascending towards heaven. Lucifer realizes that this is a selfless sacrifice, and out of desperation, he heals John and eliminates his cancer by pulling all the tar that's clogging his lungs.
In the last scene, we see him pulling a chewing gum, which at first appears to be a cigarette because of the manner he pulled it, and looking over the city. Keanu Reeves' Constantine was ready for a new adventure at that moment, but we are still waiting to see him in action.
Is there any chance of Constantine appearing in James Gunn's DCU?

There's only one link in James Gunn's DCU that could bring Keanu Reeves' Constantine into the new DC Universe: Swamp Thing. Now we don't know the story of the upcoming film that James Mangold is directing, but Constantine has a history with Swamp Thing.
He once investigated a case where the occult detective had to find Swamp Thing. Interestingly, Superman and Batman both played a part in this story. It's really unlikely that we'll see that story in the new DCU, but that would be thrilling.
And if we are getting a Constantine sequel in association with James Gunn's DCU, Francis Lawrence needs to return to the director's chair.
