Even if we want to fit Interstellar's timeline into a single line, we cannot do it because of its final sequence, where humanity has been saved by "them," which is basically the future humans only. But if we take that out of the equation, then we can say that, from the 'Present Day,' which was the year 2067 (the first hour of the film focuses on this year only), it spans around 130 years.

To this date, after 11 years of its release, even if fans are watching the film, they might get confused about the plot's timeline. Because there are instances where the characters are spending their time in their spacecraft, and in the next few minutes, they have lost decades on Earth. If you aren't confused, then you have mastered that film, sort of.

But for some, especially the first-timers, Interstellar's timeline can get really messy. So we try to lay out a simple timeline that will help you understand this Christopher Nolan masterpiece the next time you sit around to watch it. For starters, it is set up in 2067 initially.

Interstellar's present day is set in 2067

Matthew McConaughey was born in 1969. When he was filming the movie with Christopher Nolan, he was 44 years old, given that the filming began in late 2013. However, his character, Joseph Cooper, aka Coop, is like 35-36 years of age, as he was born sometime around 2031 or 2032.

This is the year when the Earth in the movie has become uninhabitable. The Blight, the plague at the core of the film, is at large. It has been over 30 years since it began, and it has been affecting the crops across the globe. Dust winds blow like hell, and there are not enough trees to tackle this.

Now, to save humanity from extinction, Cooper has to join NASA to find a secure place in the galaxy that can provide a habitable space so the humans can continue to survive. That is the gist of the film, basically.

After Cooper leaves the earth, leaving his home behind and, most importantly, his 10-year-old daughter, Murph (Mackenzie Foy). It is a hard watch when he is in a truck and watches in the mirror, hoping that Murph has somehow hopped on the back, hiding there somewhere.

Now it is hard to track time in Interstellar after Cooper has left the Earth alongside the rest of the crew, Dr. Amelia Brand (Anne Hathaway), Doyle (Wes Bentley), and Professor Romilly (David Gyasi).

The scene in space after the crew is on their expedition and decides that they are to land on Miller's planet. It is the year 2069 on Earth now in Interstellar. But, then we are aware of what became one of the most infamous sequences, Miller's Planet, which costs them 23 years, so it is the year 2092 on Earth now.

When Coop returns on the ship, he finds these messages from Earth and finds that his kids have all grown up. Not just that, there is a message from his son, Tom (Casey Affleck), that his grandson had died. But Tom had another son, and he named him Coop in memory of his father. He was born in 2086 on Earth.

The rest of Interstellar shows that humanity is saved, and it is the year 2155 or 2156 when Cooper wakes up in the hospital and meets an elderly Murph who is on her deathbed.
