Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma have always been vocal and public about their relationship. The Lizzie McGuire alum posted a lengthy, heartfelt Instagram post wishing Matthew Koma a very happy birthday on June 2, 2025.
The two met each other over twelve years ago when Duff was recording her fifth studio album, Breathe In, Breathe Out. They started off as friends, which later bloomed into a relationship four years later (2017). Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma tied the knot right before 2019 ended on December 21, in a small and intimate ceremony.
Six years down the line, the couple shares three children together and has celebrated multiple birthdays and other milestones with each other. Hilary Duff started her Instagram birthday post for her husband by writing:
"My sweet insta poet - I can't compete with your compilation of words but I can share that every one of my days are comfier, funnier, sturdier, and more balanced with you in them. We have celebrated a lot of June 2nds together and since slide nine we’ve tripled in size. I’m so proud of us - making it through some of these days seems impossible but you are always there to cook or pack a meal, keep us caffeinated, carry all the bags, let me add one more stop/plan to our day, have a last minute party, or add a new animal into our already pulling at the seams life."
She continued her appreciation for Matthew Koma by saying:
"This wild house loves you. You have the most curvy/interesting mind. Truly enthralled and entertained to hear takes from it everyday. I'm lucky our kids are half you & dear god hope they get some filter from me. I hope all your dreams come true this year & and I hope we get a few more Ojai sleeps than the last. Happy 38 Daddy".
Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma's relationship timeline
As mentioned, Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma met in 2013 when she was working on her fifth studio album. According to Duff, this is what she had to say about their first meeting:
"There wasn't an instant spark because I think when you're walking into a professional meeting, you know nothing about the other person. I didn't know if he was dating someone… And then when we started talking about music, things started sparking and he was being funny enough, not flirtatious, but funny enough to where we started creating a banter and a nice friendship right off the bat."
Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma dated casually over the years but did not make it official till January 28, 2017, when they attended the SAG Awards pre-party in matching black outfits. This was the first time they debuted as a couple on the red carpet. The following month, they were seen spending Valentine's Day together in Costa Rica. However, in March, both Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma took a break from seeing each other.
A few months later, there were rumors about the two seeing each other again. According to an insider source, they revealed:
"Since Matt got back from tour, they've been seeing each other again... Him being gone on tour was the main reason things didn't work out the first time around so now that he's back they picked up right where they left off."
By October, the couple was posting photos together again on Instagram. Hilary Duff posted a few photos from her 30th birthday, calling it her "most favorite birthday ever". Finally, in December 2017, the Cinderella Story actress got candid about her relationship with Koma. She said:
"It's going so great... I mean, this is the third time that we've dated... Timing is such a big deal … third time's a charm! I think that you have history and a past with someone and love, and just because it doesn't work out the first time, the second time, as long as there's not too much damage done, then, it can always work out again," Duff expressed on a hopeful note.
During the following year, the couple's relationship got more serious. Both Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma posted on their social media, announcing that they are expecting a baby girl. On October 25, 2018, they welcomed their first child, Banks Violet Bair.
The pair just kept growing stronger and closer to each other in their relationship. By May 2019, the Younger star revealed how Matthew Koma proposed to her. She spoke to Vogue and said:
"I'd had a very long day... We love to take walks together, and so he's like, let's go on a walk, you had a day. Let's just get out and chat and catch up, there's this new park I want to take you to, and it's supposed to be gorgeous."
She also revealed that he gave her a notebook filled with illustrations of herself and Koma. She continued:
"It's our whole entire story mapped out for us to refer back to as we get older and for our kids to know, which is amazing... I get to the very last page, and there's a little piece that I have to lift up and my ring was inside. It was so sweet. It was really special and really simple, which is very much how we are and how we operate. Then it started raining, and it was perfect."
As mentioned, Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma have always been expressive, sharing their love with their fans and followers. On June 16, 2019, which was Father's Day, Hilary Duff posted a loving caption for her husband and new dad. She wrote:
"You always put us first. You know exactly what to say. Affectionate beyond. Calm and strong. The kids don't even know how lucky they are that it's you ... but they will... We love you more than words. This is my favorite picture of you and Banksy on her arrival day. It's burned into my memory for life."
After more than two years together, the couple finally decided to get married in 2019. They had a small and intimate wedding surrounded by their loved ones. The pair honeymooned in South Africa in the following month.
However, Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma's relationship was not always smooth sailing, at least that is what the media depicted. In March 2020, there were rumors that the couple was having marital problems. The Lizzy McGuire alum laughed it off and simply said:
"Apparently Matt and I are having trouble... He hasn't told me yet."
The rumors of marriage trouble were shut down in September 2020, when Matthew Koma posted a photo of Hilary's name tattooed on his backside. He captioned the photo:
"Good luck winning a fight with your wife when her name's tattooed on your b*tt cheek."
Towards the end of the year, Hilary and Matthew Koma shared that they are expecting their second child. They also celebrated their first wedding anniversary in December 2020. On March 24, 2021, the couple welcomed their second baby girl, Mae James Bair.
They also shared some sweet posts and comments on National Spouse Day. Hilary Duff posted on Instagram:
"You tease and give me hell Matthew and I love you so much. My own personal troll. Keep me please," to which he replied, "Ugh my prozac can't fight the tears from you being so sweet. I love you."
From celebrating Hilary Duff's 30th birthday to being there for her on her 36th birthday, the couple has achieved numerous relationship milestones over the years. It was Matthew Koma's turn to be romantic on Instagram. He wrote:
"You blow me away everyday with your ability to juggle the un-juggle-able… you do it with such ease & grace. You have an endless well of energy and patience that makes you the super-mom + super-wife you are, all while bringing your wildest dreams to earth level, then still somehow giving a sh*t about our dogs at the end of the day."
He continued:
"It’s truly an honor to be riding shotgun and I know this year is going to usher in even more miracles to smile about. Thank you for loving us ba, we love you back so much."
In December 2023, the couple announced they are expecting their third child together. By May 2024, they welcomed another baby girl into the family named Townes Meadow Bair. Last year, Matthew Koma and Hilary Duff celebrated five years of their marriage. The producer wrote a cute message on Instagram for his wife:
"You chose me to do the impossible with. And as we navigate through the truly IN IT years, I think the most exciting thing is knowing on the other side of this, we get each other. You’re my favorite person to do absolutely anything and everything with... Thank you for filling these first 5 years with every topping on the menu. I know we’re still at the starting line, but I fully trust you’ll lead us all the way home."
Hilary Duff responded by replying, "Happy 5 my lover," in the comments.
Long captions and heartfelt posts are not something new for Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma. The pair has always been expressive when it comes to celebrating birthdays, their babies, or any achievements. Their love notes for each other on Instagram reveal a love that is expressive and enduring.
