Martin was a native of Oakland and later attended St. Mary’s High School, where he showed his love for football. Before joining Tampa Bay, he played college football for the Boise State Broncos. Later, he also earned the nickname "Muscle Hamster" for his performance.

By his last year, he was one of the best players on the team and helped Boise State win many games.

During his rookie season, he rushed for 1,454 yards, scored 11 touchdowns, and made the Pro Bowl. While Martin had a strong rookie year in 2012, his best season came three years later, according to ESPN, with the outlet reporting:

"He rushed for 1,402 yards and six TDs and had 33 catches for 271 yards and another score."

Along with Tampa Bay, he also played for the Oakland Raiders during his career. Martin recorded 30 touchdowns and 5,356 rushing yards in his NFL career.

Remembering him, his coach, Jeff Choate, wrote:

"My thoughts and prayers are with the Martin family. The joy Doug played the game with and the smile he always had I will carry with me. It was a pleasure to coach Doug and he will be missed. Fly high Muscle Hamster!"

Reporter Jenna Laine wrote:

"This first pic I snapped of Doug Martin is how I will always remember him. He had a playful spirit. Gerald McCoy had a tradition of treating teammates to a visit from the ice cream truck on the last day of minicamp and Doug was always very happy about this. An honor to cover him."
