Daniel Day-Lewis comes out of acting retirement for Anemone, a drama film that marks his son Ronan Day-Lewis's directorial debut. The father-son duo co-wrote the script that revolves around the profound themes of complicated family relationships. Its synopsis, per IMDb, reads:
"Family bonds between fathers, sons, and brothers are explored as complex relationships unfold through personal journeys and generational conflicts."
Focus Features, which handles its distribution for the United States, has set its release date for October 3, 2025. It is scheduled for an initial limited release followed by a nationwide release on October 10.
Anemone marks Daniel Day-Lewis's return to acting after Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread, which was released in 2017. The film was a major critical success, and it earned one Oscar out of the six nominations it received, including one for Day-Lewis' acting performance. After the film, the actor announced his acting retirement through his publicist with the following note:
“Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years.”
The now-68-year-old actor has not revealed any specific plans for his return to the acting profession. He has not yet disclosed whether he will continue collaborating with his filmmaker son either.
