Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning had a great run at the theaters.
The action spy film was the eighth installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise. It started in 1996, when Ethan Hunt was just a small-time IMF agent. At the time, he was suspected of being a mole in the organization. Still, he escaped those charges and found the actual mole. Since then, he continued fighting the good fight, as a trusty agent or a fugitive.
The 2025 film showed Ethan in another fight against time. It brought back everything viewers love about the franchise: the killer stakes, a stellar cast, and the death-defying stunts. Tom Cruise returned as the invincible lead agent. He was joined by Ving Rhames, Hayley Atwell, and Simon Pegg, who played Ethan's allies.
Pom Klementieff and Greg Tarzan Davis returned to the cast, but their characters changed teams and joined Ethan's. Their film arrived in theaters on May 23, 2025, with Paramount Pictures handling its distribution. Before that, it premiered at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, over a week after its world premiere in Tokyo. So far, it has earned over $588 million, with $195 million domestically and $392 million overseas (per The Numbers).
Most critics loved the film upon its release, and audiences did too. It holds a reputable 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. Audiences thought it was finally "Mission: Accomplished." So, their scores raised the rating to a whopping 88%. Soon, more viewers will be able to catch Ethan's final mission against an AI entity when the film becomes available online on digital platforms.
Is there any other Tom Cruise project coming out soon?

After Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, Tom Cruise has a few more projects on the horizon. He will return in the upcoming yet-untitled film from Alejandro G. Iñárritu (the director behind Birdman and The Revenant). His role sounds quite similar to Ethan Hunt's. After all, he would play the world's most powerful man, out to prove that he is humanity's last hope. That's almost Ethan Hunt in a nutshell!
Besides this project, Cruise is also slated to star in Deeper, an underwater thriller, where he will be paired against Ana de Armas (Ballerina, Blonde).
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning will be out on digital platforms on August 19, 2025.
