James Sweeney will soon be seen romancing Dylan O’Brien in his next film called Twinless, which he has written, directed, and co-produced. Actually, some have already seen it, as it premiered during the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. In addition to Dylan and James, Aisling Franciosi, Lauren Graham, and Tasha Smith also star.

Paramount Pictures’ acquisition-only label, Republic Pictures, was initially set to distribute the film, but it has now sold the rights to Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate. As Variety reports, the sale has been finalized. While these two companies will handle U.S. distribution, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions will manage international distribution.

The film will hit theaters on September 5, 2025—a day before the final Downton Abbey film and on the same day as The Conjuring: Last Rites. Moreover, it shares the month of September with another highly anticipated film, One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro.

What more do we know about Twinless?

Only a few details have been released, including the film’s accolades. It was nominated for three awards at the Sundance Film Festival following its premiere on January 23, 2025: Grand Jury Prize – U.S. Dramatic, Audience Award – U.S. Dramatic, and U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting. Twinless won the latter two.

Prior to Sundance, at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, James Sweeney was recognized as one of the Directors to Watch.

As of this writing, the film holds a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 44 reviews, with critics describing the actors’ performances as “captivating” and the film as a “clever comedy.” Additionally, Metacritic has rated it 81 out of 100.

A little light on Twinless story

The story revolves around Roman and Dennis, who meet at a group therapy session. As the title suggests, they have lost their twins. They both confide in each other as the story unfolds. What’s interesting is that Dennis reminds Roman of his brother—and this is where things get a little uneasy, as they enter a physical relationship.

As Variety reports, Roadside Attractions’ co-presidents described the film as:

"Genuine comedic crowd pleaser and sophisticated examination of male friendship in the internet age."

We will see how true fans find that when the film finally hits big screens in the U.S. and globally.
