Netflix's Abandoned Man has been the Turkish drama everyone is talking about. Helmed by Çagri Vila Lostuvali, the film tells a poignant story about grief and familial trauma, and a major factor in the film's premise is its stunning locations.
The film found its backdrop in Turkey, leaning towards Istanbul. As reported, the film was shot in the city under the working title Tamir Adam from July 2024 and went on till August. As reports stated, the neighborhood of Arnavutköy, in Beşiktaş, served as the backdrop to many scenes, and some prime locations can be seen in many shots in the film.
And then there’s the Bosphorus Bridge. Towering across the strait since 1973, it appears in the establishing shots of the film. With Abandoned Man, Istanbul once again proved that no set designer could outmatch the drama it carries in its bones.
Turkey has been a prime location for quite a few Hollywood movies because of its ancient aesthetics, somber tones, and that Hollywood feel. More movies shot in Turkey include Aftersun, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Argo, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Murder on the Orient Express, Taken 2, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and The Water Diviner.
More details about Abandoned Man
Directed by Çağrı Vila Lostuvalı, Abandoned Man explores how one family’s choices can alter the course of a young boy’s life forever. At a young age, Baran is forced by his father to take the blame for a hit-and-run committed by his elder brother, Fatih. What was expected to be a brief juvenile sentence turns into 15 long years in prison, cutting Baran off from his family and stripping away his youth. Though Fatih regularly seeks forgiveness, Baran, betrayed and broken, cannot bring himself to reconcile.
Once released, Baran faces a harsh new reality. His parents have passed away, Fatih’s household is collapsing under financial strain, and a tragic accident leaves Fatih in a coma and his wife dead.
With his prison friend Esat, played by Rahim Can Kapkap, and the reluctant guidance of Musa, played by Ercan Kesal, a garage owner drowning in his own grief, Baran begins to rebuild. Every rusted car, every failed attempt, and every scraped-together coin becomes a metaphor for his struggle: that sometimes, even broken engines and broken men can be coaxed back to life.
Written by Deniz Madanoğlu and Murat Uyurkulak and produced by Onur Güvenatam under OGM Pictures, Abandoned Man is less a film than a meditation on survival. It is about guilt that never fades, love that arrives when least expected, and resilience that refuses to collapse.
Abandoned Man is now available to stream on Netflix.
