17 years ago, Ben Stiller directed the satirical comedy Tropic Thunder (2008). The film featured a star-studded cast including Robert Downey Jr., Matthew McConaughey, Tom Cruise, and others, and continues to entertain audiences much as it did when it was first released.
The good news is that you can watch the film for free, as it’s currently streaming on Tubi and Hoopla. If you have subscriptions to services like FuboTV, Philo, Paramount+, and others, it’s available there as well.
It was released on August 13, 2008, and stayed at the top of the domestic box office for three consecutive weeks. By the end of its theatrical run, it garnered $195.7 million in revenue. Critically speaking, the film currently boasts an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 252 ratings.
What is Tropic Thunder about?

The Ben Stiller film follows a director struggling to make a movie due to uncooperative actors and escalating production costs. To address this, the Vietnam War veteran whose memoir is being adapted in Tropic Thunder offers a suggestion. He proposes placing the actors in a jungle and hiding cameras to capture more authentic footage.
But things go comically wrong when the actors are stuck in this jungle and are confronted by an extremist organization called Flaming Dragon. The best part of the entire story is that the actors aren’t really aware of the trouble they have fallen into and still believe that this is all a part of the movie.
It’s evident in a Tropic Thunder scene where Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller) is captured and believes he’s in a prisoner of war camp from the script. However, it turns into his worst nightmare when he’s forced to play a character from one of his own films that was a box office bomb, Simple Jack.
What is the best scene of the movie?

For some, Tropic Thunder's best moment might be Robert Downey Jr.’s Kirk Lazarus questioning Speedman: “What do you mean, ‘you people’?” Others might point to the pyrotechnics, intended for a specific scene, going off for no reason.
But there's one scene that steals the spotlight from the entire Tropic Thunder crew. In it, Rick (McConaughey), Kirk's best friend and agent, confronts Les Grossman (Cruise) about the contract while the Flaming Dragon calls for ransom. This is when Grossman delivers his iconically gross speech.
First, take a big step back... and literally, F*CK YOUR OWN FACE! I don't know what kind of pan-pacific bullsh*t power play you're trying to pull here, but Asia Jack is my territory. So whatever you're thinking, you'd better think again! Otherwise I'm gonna have to head down there and I will rain down an un-Godly f*cking firestorm upon you! You're gonna have to call the f*cking United Nations and get a f*cking binding resolution to keep me from f*cking destroying you. I'm talking scorched earth, motherf*cker! I will massacre you! I WILL F*CK YOU UP!
If you haven't seen this one, you are missing out on one of the best Tom Cruise performances ever.
