The stars of the popular CBS sitcom, Knots Landing, recently spoke out about Constance McCashin,78, being written off the show. They revealed that her exit was deeply unceremonious.
Joan Van Ark, Michele Lee, and Donna Mills recently reunited at the Southfork Experience in Texas on August 9, 2025. Recalling McCashin's exit, Van Ark, 82, said:
“It isn't a good goodbye. It would never be with an actress of her stature, but it leaves a scar in a tiny way, and she was invaluable.”
Mills, 84, recalled that McCashin was “very hurt” when the executive decided to write off her character to cut down production costs. Constance McCashin portrayed the role of Laura Avery Sumner from 1979 to 1987.
The actress transitioned from acting to a career as a psychotherapist, as per her official website. She now lives in West Newton, Massachusetts.

Constance McCashin was born on June 18, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois. She is famously recognised for portraying the character of Laura Avery Sumner in Knots Landing.
She stepped into acting at the age of five, per her biography on her official website. At that time, she appeared on the iconic show, The Howdy Doody Show. Her breakthrough role came 25 years later with Knots Landing. She completed her major in English at a small Catholic women's college and then moved to New York City.
She started her career in the late ‘70s and ‘80s. Her popular shows are Family and You Are The Jury. She made her exit from Knots Landing when her character died of a brain tumor in the show's 200th episode.
She is also known for appearing on Brooklyn Bridge for two seasons. After the series, she went to pursue a Masters in psychology. After relocating to Boston, she obtained her Masters in Social Work from Simmons College.

Her husband, Sam Weisman, an actor, director, and producer, introduced her to his friend, David Jacobs, who was a producer too. He first offered her a role in Married: The First Year, and later she was cast for the show. She recalled the moment and thanked her husband. She said:
“And then, really thanks to David, he wrote the part for me on Knots Landing and he gave me the script, I don’t remember the sequence of events, but it was Christmas Day that we went over to his house, it really changed my life…”
“I mean, I guess I could say, in hindsight, that my husband was the one who was instrumental in changing my life but then David ultimately gave me the part on Knots and….you know.”
Constance McCashin has been married to Weisman since October 15, 1978. The couple shares two children: Daniel Weisman and Marguerite Weisman.
In her interview, she shared that her son worked for Jay-Z’s company, Roc Nation, where he was an executive artist manager. He is currently a Principal in the Nashville office of Bernstein Private Wealth Management. He is the older brother of his sister, per his IMDb profile.
