Echo Valley is a brooding mystery thriller streaming on Apple TV+. Written by Brad Ingelsby and directed by Michael Pearce, it is rooted in the tragedies of a strained mother-daughter relationship.
Here's the official synopsis:
"In the edge-of-your-seat thriller Echo Valley, Kate (Oscar winner Julianne Moore) is a mother struggling to make peace with her troubled daughter Claire (multi-Emmy nominee Sydney Sweeney) — a situation that becomes even more perilous when Claire shows up on Kate’s doorstep, hysterical and covered in someone else’s blood. As Kate pieces together the shocking truth of what happened, she learns just how far a mother will go to try to save her child in this gripping tale of love, sacrifice, and survival from BAFTA-winning director Michael Pearce and Emmy-nominated writer Brad Ingelsby."
Aside from Moore and Sweeney, the cast includes Fiona Shaw, Domhnall Gleeson, Kyle MacLachlan, Edmund Donovan, and more. With their powerful performances, the film handles the dramatic beats of the central relationship while slowly turning into a chilling genre film that gets under your skin.
The credit also goes to its locations that translate their strengths and anxieties with an absorbing backdrop of Hunterdon County, New Jersey, which served as the key filming location for Echo Valley. The other locations include other parts of New Jersey, like Lambertville.
Julianne Moore's Echo Valley on Apple TV+ filming locations explored
Hunterdon County, New Jersey
Echo Valley was filmed in Hunterdon County in New Jersey, which offers plenty of quaint, suburban landscapes. Most of the shoot took place at the Plum Broke Farm in Delaware Township, which offered the ideal setting for a story about a horse trainer and her daughter.
Its isolated environment offers an atmospheric tone that captures the film's brooding look and feel. It also helps build the pathos of its emotionally distant and relatively reserved central characters.
In an interview with Vogue, Moore speaks in detail about her experience of filming in New Jersey and the logistical issues she faced during this process.
"All the exteriors were shot on a real lake in New Jersey and all we could think about was what was the temperature going to be like in the water. It’s one thing to get into a cold lake in the day when the sun is shining, it’s another to get into a cold lake in the middle of the night. And I had to do both."
Per MyCentralJersey.com, the filming also took place in some locations in Lambertville, most likely for scenes when characters leave the farm.
London, England
During the interview with Vogue, Moore reveals that the underwater scenes featuring Kate were shot in London. She says,
"The water scenes were terrifying to me.—All the deep underwater scenes took place in a tank in London. It was the first time I had done anything like this. I had a day of training [when I] learned how to use a regulator—how to inhale as much air then remove it underwater. It was really daunting—exciting, as well—but that was the thing I had the most trepidation about. But now I’m really glad that I had that opportunity."
However, some reports suggest that these scenes were shot in the Pinewood Studios, which offered a controlled environment of an underwater stage, necessary to shoot without any hiccups.
Echo Valley is now streaming on Apple TV+.
