Jodi Hildebrandt is a family counselor who is the subject of Netflix's documentary film Evil Influencer. It focuses on how Hildebrandt became friends with a vlogger named Ruby Franke and ended up abusing her children.

Franke ran a YouTube channel called 8 Passengers and was living with her children in Utah. Later on, Hildebrandt and Franke started abusing the latter's children in the name of religious extremism.

The duo was eventually caught and they pleaded guilty to four counts of child abuse in December 2023. They were given a life sentence that may vary between four and 30 years, as per Utah state prison laws. In December 2026, the duo will go through a parole hearing.

Hildebrandt is serving her time at the Utah State Correctional Facility in Salt Lake City. The documentary's director, Skye Borgman, has stated that she continues to behave erratically even inside the prison.

“[Jodi] was creating these little groups of women and talking to them about addiction, and seeking out people who have drug addictions or alcohol addictions. She’s looking for people who have vulnerabilities and trying to coach them or counsel them within this prison structure. So, it seems like she's continuing to do what she was doing outside.”

Borgman also spoke to people who were manipulated by Hildebrandt.

“The participants that I spoke to who were seeing Jodi for some kind of therapy are happy that the film is coming out. They wanted to tell their story of how Jodi manipulated them, how she used sort of this intersection of trust and power and harm to really obscure their own sense of self and family and religion, and how it can happen to pretty much anybody.”

Hildebrandt had founded a company called ConneXions, which is out of operation. Borgman also spoke about Ruby Franke, who is also serving the same sentence. The documentary mentions that Ruby has started to distance herself from Hildebrandt inside the prison. She said:

“I think this separation helps Ruby recognize where she was and what Jodi was doing. I also think it’s a form of self-preservation. She’s looking at the potential time that she could be spending in prison. I think that she’s kind of going, ‘Wait a minute, if I separate myself, maybe I won’t get judged as harshly.’”

The film is streaming on Netflix.
