The video game's maiden live-action film came out in the year 1994, and it had Jean-Claude Van Damme in the lead role. A second adaptation was called Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, and its release was in 2009. The second instalment was a critical and commercial failure.
Legendary Pictures bought the live-action and television rights to the video game in April 2023, and it went into the scripting stage. Danny and Michael Philippou were first supposed to direct it. However, in February this year, Kitao Sakurai's name was announced.
At the 2025 Game Awards, the makers dropped the film's teaser video. The nearly one-minute-long teaser provides glimpses of all the big characters from the film. It also had many fight sequences, which are a signature of this franchise.
The film will release on October 16, 2026.
