The latest sci-fi South Korean film on Netflix is making huge waves on the streamer. It's called The Great Flood. While the first half of the film plays linearly, the second half has a twist where you, alongside the lead protagonist of the film, will be stuck in a time loop, saving a child.

According to the film's official synopsis (per Netflix),

On what may be the last day on Earth, a life-or-death struggle in a flooded apartment quickly becomes humankind's one and only hope for survival.

It comes from South Korean director Byung-woo Kim, who is known for projects like The Terror Live (2013), Take Point (2018), Writter (2008), and more. He also wrote the script.

The Great Flood stars Kim Da-mi as the film's lead, An-na, who is trying to save her android son. Alongside her, Park Hae-soo, Kwon Eun-sung, Yuna, and more are in supporting roles.

The filming of the project began in July 2022 and ran through January 2023. Not a range of locations was used to shoot the film. So, where was it shot? We'll see in the section below.

The Great Flood was shot in Seoul, South Korea.

The capital of South Korea is one of the major places when it comes to shooting films and has been featured in a range of blockbuster projects around the globe.

If we look at South Korean cinema, the only non-English film to have won the Academy Award for Best Picture, Parasite (2019), features the location. All in all, the movie was nominated for six Oscars, winning four. It is about a poor family working for an affluent family, where the former infiltrates the latter's house as the story moves. It also sheds light on the difference between rich and poor lives.

Another iconic South Korean movie, Oldboy (2003), also features the location. The movie also features one of the most talked-about sequences shot in the history of cinema. The sequence we are referring to is the single-shot corridor fight scene where Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) fights through a large group of enemies.

The 2006 monster film, The Host, which is directed by Parasite director Bong Joon Ho, features Seoul as a location in the film.

Some American films featuring the region include Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), The Bourne Legacy (2012), and more.

What is The Great Flood about?

The Great Flood is about scientists trying to repopulate another planet with humans, as the Earth is about to be hit by a major catastrophic event. An-na, the film's lead, and her simulation are at the core of the movie, and the people involved need to find a way to help artificial beings in the film develop emotions.

Emotions and artificial beings don't really go hand in hand. However, we have seen such themes being played in Blade Runner films. If we look more recently, it's Tron: Ares that plays a similar theme, though the digital character in it naturally develops feelings and emotions, which is quite unnatural.
