The adaptation of Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder Club book into a cozy, warm, and entertaining murder mystery by Chris Columbus and Netflix is turning out to be a big hit with the audience.

Along with a new audience who've discovered Osman's world through Netflix, the loyal fans of the Richard Osman murder mystery series are turning up in big numbers for the group of unlikely sleuths who solve crime, as Netflix reports 24.7 million views in the opening weekend.

However, the fans who've read the mystery series are concerned about the fate of one of the beloved characters in the possible sequels to the series. Chris Columbus, in a recent conversation with Collider, eases these worries while explaining just how Bogdan's fate might play out in the upcoming film if Netflix chooses to renew The Thursday Murder Club.

Director Chris Columbus reassured fans by revealing that he had consumed every available material on the Richard Osman novel series before creating his characters and adapting the story:

"So we knew where every character was going, even the smallest detail, that Joyce was thinking of buying a dog. Those kinds of things were important for us in terms of making the film, so even the actors knew where they were going with the characters."

He went on to address the common worry that was bothering fans of the series regarding Bogdan's fate and the possible direction the story would take, considering the different route that the film seems to take:

Well, in terms of the film, we all felt that it would be slightly more interesting, maybe satisfying, if Bogdan were arrested. Certain people who've read the book, a minority, but it's something I'll address. Certain people who read the book were a little concerned that Bogdan got arrested, and they were talking about the fact, 'well, he comes back in book two and three, and he's such an essential character.'"

Finally, Columbus reassured fans by announcing that if the sequel was green-lit, Bogdan would definitely return and the sequel would be a faithful adaptation of the second novel, The Man Who Died Twice. He went on to explain that the decision to have Bogdan arrested was a creative choice to provide a cathartic end to the mystery rather than an anticlimactic one where the murderer goes scot-free.

So, of course, he's going to come back. You know, there's a reason that he killed Tony Curran in self-defense, people… just use the slightest bit of imagination and think about what self-defense means. It means he's going to get out of jail very quickly....Of course, we're going to be even, you know, as faithful to the second book as possible. But again, we have to think of the fact that we are doing a film, and sometimes, you have certain time constrictions.

The Thursday Murder Club has not been renewed for a sequel film by Netflix at the time of writing. Since the film's release on August 28 on Netflix, it has continued to perform well with almost 25 million viewers in the opening week.

The film, an adaptation of the Richard Osman series, has three published and one unpublished sequel book available as source material, so there is a high possibility that Netflix will choose to renew the Helen Mirren starrer for another installment.

Netflix's The Thursday Murder Club managed to duplicate the warm and cozy aesthetic of Osman's series perfectly in a faithful adaptation. However, there are a lot of details in the film that are different from the novel. One of the biggest differences, however, lies in the character and fate of Bogdan, played by Henry Lloyd-Hughes.

The difference in Bogdan's fate in the Netflix film and its source material

In the Richard Osman novel The Thursday Murder Club, Bogdan is the person responsible for the murder of the Coopers Chase co-owner, Tony Curran, as discovered by Stephen in a game of chess and his wife, Elizabeth. This reveal remains faithful in the film adaptation, down to the chess game where Stephen discovers Bogdan's crime.

However, it is after this discovery that the novel's and film's plots diverge. In the Netflix adaptation, Elizabeth decides to turn Bogdan over to the police, and he is later arrested. His reasons behind the murder also seem to be different in the adaptation.

In The Thursday Murder Club novel, however, Stephen and Elizabeth keep the truth about Bogdan's actions to themselves. She never turns him over to the police, and therefore, he is never arrested. The hard-luck Polish handyman, in the later books, goes on to help The Thursday Murder Club in their sleuthing, playing an exponentially important role in the sequel books.

This difference in Bogdan's fate worried loyal readers of the book about the faithfulness of possible sequel adaptations to the series and the fate of Bogdan's character in them. However, Chris Columbus, director of The Thursday Murder Club film, sat down to reassure fans of their worries in his latest conversation and confirmed that the character will return if and when a sequel happens.
