Before Shea Whigham was tearing it up chasing Ethan Hunt across rooftops in Mission: Impossible, he had one of the most gloriously ridiculous deaths in Kong: Skull Island, and honestly, it’s a scene you won’t forget.

Whigham plays Captain Earl Cole, the gruff, no-nonsense military guy who’s basically the “don’t mess with me” type. He’s that seasoned soldier who’s seen some serious stuff and takes his job dead seriously. So you’d expect his death to be epic, right? Like some heroic last stand, where he saves the day in a blaze of glory. Unfortunately, it isn't.

When Cole and his squad get hunted by a massive, terrifying Skullcrawler (think: giant nightmare monster), Cole decides to sacrifice himself so the others can live. He pulls the pins on the two grenades, telling everyone to get out and live their lives. Classic hero move. But then, out of nowhere, the Skullcrawler’s tail whips him off like a ragdoll, and instead of the heroic grenade toss you’re bracing for, Cole ends up flying into a mountain ridge and blowing up into dust.

It’s dark, it’s absurd, and it’s somehow hilarious.

Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts plays with the scene perfectly, slow-mo on Cole’s friends begging him to run with them, building tension like you’re about to witness a legendary sacrifice. Then bam, back to real time, and wham, he’s gone in a cloud of explosions. It’s a brutal reminder that on Skull Island, even the toughest soldiers are just dinner for the monsters.

Shea Whigham later revealed he actually filmed the scene as an epic grenade throw into the monster’s mouth, but CGI flipped the script into this hilariously tragic moment.

Talking to Collider, the actor revealed,

“I go see it...I’m sitting there, and the tail whips me into the mountain. And I go to the director, and I’m saying to him, ‘Hey man …’ But then my kids are like, ‘Pop, 100 million people have viewed that thing!’”

He laughed about it, saying his kids think it’s the funniest thing ever, and yeah, it’s been watched millions of times online for good reason.

This scene isn’t just a death; it’s a perfect mix of grit, chaos, and dark humor, and Shea Whigham’s performance makes it unforgettable. So if you want a wild, explosive death that’s as funny as it is epic, Kong: Skull Island has got you covered.

Shea Whigham’s role as Jasper Briggs in Mission: Impossible is that gritty, no-nonsense force of nature you don’t see coming until he’s already got you cornered. Briggs isn’t just the guy chasing Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt for the sake of it, he’s the kind of sharp, relentless intelligence officer who believes every move he makes is for the greater good, even if that means turning up the heat and breaking a few rules.

This role lets Whigham flex his signature style: making every glance, every pause, packed with meaning. Briggs feels real, flawed, and human, which adds weight to the movie’s high-octane chaos. He’s the perfect dark shadow to Ethan Hunt’s wild energy, the guy who reminds you that even in a world of insane stunts, the smartest player can change the game.

You can catch Shea Whigham in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, playing now in theaters.
