He later moved to Toronto to study at Ryerson University's business school, then left college to play basketball. After that, Gorham attended an art school in Stockholm, from which he earned a degree in fine arts. During his chat with Into The Gloss, Ben Gorham talked about how he met a perfumer after he graduated from art school. He told the outlet:“I did a degree in fine arts; I did painting and sculpture, history, photography and a few different things. He said the perfumer showed him some provocative things that brought back a memory. He said:“It could take you places—almost like music—in a very instant way. He showed me in his perfume lab, raw materials like chocolate, or incense, and it would very much be an experience I had. So it started as a creative discussion more about the possibilities.”In an interview during the Paris Fashion Week in 2022, Gorham said:“I had no experience when it came to perfume, but I became interested in this idea of smell as a medium and in the connection between memory and smell, and I asked this perfumer to help me put together a creative project and the interest grew into an obsession.”Ben Gorham eventually started off by making candles in his kitchen as the art of perfume seemed too complex initially. They gradually became popular, and Ben Gorham decided to pursue it full-time, founding Byredo in 2006. The word "Byredo" comes from an Old English phrase, which means “By redolence", meaning “sweet-smelling perfume.”In June this year, Ben Gorham stepped down as the creative director of Byredo following Puig’s acquisition of the company. Puig is the Spanish luxury group behind brands like Charlotte Tilbury and Rabanne. A report in L’Officiel stated that Puig acquired a majority stake in Byredo in 2022, valuing the Swedish luxury fragrance brand at approximately €1 billion.
