Bryant Gumbel, the 77-year-old veteran journalist and former Today show host, was hospitalized in New York City on Monday night, October 20, 2025.

He was admitted after a medical emergency at his Manhattan apartment, according to a report in The Independent. However, the specific cause of his hospitalization has not been disclosed. As of October 21, 2025, he was still receiving medical treatment.

Gumbel’s personal life has come to the limelight. His older brother, Greg Gumbel, an NFL and NCAA sports commentator, passed away in December 2024. He died after his battle with cancer.

Bryant Gumbel was married twice. His first marriage was to June Baranco in December 1973. She was an American artist and designer and was also known as June Gumbel. They were together until their divorce in 2001 after 28 years of marriage. His second marriage was to Hilary Quinlan.

Bryant Gumbel’s personal life explored amid hospitalization

Born on September 29, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, Bryant Gumbel is known for developing intriguing stories on a variety of topics. He appeared on HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, an investigative sports journalism series he hosted from 1995 until his retirement in 2023.

He is also known for hosting NBC Sports' GrandStand NFL pre-game show. He later co-hosted CBS's The Early Show.

Bryant Gumbel’s divorce from his first wife, June, attracted widespread attention from the media. They were married for almost three decades. He and June finally got a divorce in 2001 after having been married for 28 years.

According to the reports, their divorce took place primarily due to Bryant’s alleged adultery. His wife, June, accused Bryant of being a “serial adulterer.” Reportedly, the divorce settlement awarded June half of Bryant Gumbel’s estimated $20 million fortune.

June’s attorney, Barry Slotnick, told The Associated Press:

“Mrs. Gumbel was satisfied that this part of her life is over and she can go on without the concerns she had before. It was sometimes a bitter process, but she's happy and satisfied.”

They walked down the aisle on December 1, 1973. They fell in love when they saw each other for the first time on a Chicago tour. They met through a mutual friend who was in a relationship with the broadcaster’s brother, Greg Gumbel, at that time.

They welcomed two children - Bradley Christopher Gumbel and Jillian Beth Gumbel. They became parents to their first child in 1978 and to their second in 1984.

Bradley attended Lynn University and Manhattanville College and worked as an events planner in the early 2000s. Jillian studied at Sarah Lawrence College. She worked as a nanny during her college days and later married William Robins.

After his marriage to June, Bryant married his longtime girlfriend, Hilary Quinlan, in 2002. They don’t share any kids.
