English hard rock band Whitesnake’s founder and lead singer, David Coverdale, announced his retirement on November 13, after a glorious music career spanning five decades.

His wife, Cindy Barker Coverdale, celebrated his retirement via an Instagram post. She is an author and dance instructor.

“Happy ‘Official’ Retirement, Baby!! I love you with all my heart. What an incredible journey I’ve been so lucky to go on with you! Now we just get to play!! I can’t wait to see what you do next…” the caption reads.

The post was accompanied by an image of the couple, sitting inside a private jet. The caption continued:

“Side Note: When I met David 35 years ago, he told me he was retiring… This was taken flying to the last show I went to, not knowing at the time it was my last Whitesnake show… bittersweet!”

David Coverdale, 74, not only retired as the frontman of Whitesnake but also from his entire musical journey, including his time as the former singer-songwriter of Deep Purple and his collaboration with Jimmy Page.

In his message, he thanked his family, friends, fans, collaborators, crew, and the community who have “assisted and supported” him in his “incredible journey” as a musician, over the decades.

All you need to know about David Coverdale’s wife, Cindy Barker

David Coverdale exchanged wedding vows with Cindy Barker in the summer of 1997. They have a son named Jasper.

Cindy is an author, best known for the book, The Food that Rocks. She is also a pole fitness coach, dancer, and choreographer at Ethaerial Studio in Midtown Reno, Nevada, according to her Instagram.

David Coverdale’s wife has over 16,100 followers on the platform. Her bio states:

“Here’s to More Play! Expanded Consciousness! New Friendships! And More Exploration of planet Earth and the Cosmos.”

Speaking with Outlaw Magazine in 2021, the rocker revealed that his “greatest victory” in life was getting married to Cindy Barker.

“I’d prefer the word ‘reward’ – is my marriage to Cindy and my amazing children. I am blessed with daily victories. My life and career are a cornucopia of delights!” he added.

In a 2023 interview with Classic Rock History, Coverdale shared that Cindy was his “absolute partner” and confidant, whom he met in 1990. In another interview with Classic Rock 183, he added:

“I always feel I’m revealing in my music. It really is a clue that I’m a sensitive man ruled by my heart. Most of my early hits were broken-hearted, bad-girl songs. In the last 20 years, with my astonishingly positive marriage, they’re now great, positive songs. And I do well with them.”

He shared in the 2016 interview that the secret to his happy marriage with Barker was mutual “respect, support, and trust.” David also thanked the Almighty for having a trusting wife and a remarkable life.

“It really takes two to tango, as the cliché observes. This is a shared enterprise. Everything I’d experienced before – with no disrespect to anyone who’s been involved in my life on a romantic or ‘physically connected’ way – was all preparation for me to get it right with this particular person.”

David Coverdale’s first wife was Julia Borkowski. They were married from 1974 to 1982 and welcomed a daughter named Jessica, who is now 47. The 1987 Whitesnake song, Here We Go Again, was about his marital separation from Borkowski.

The Deep Purple vocalist was also married to model, actress, video vixen, producer, and stage performer Tawny Kitaen for two years, between February 1989 and April 1991.

Exploring David Coverdale’s retirement announcement

David Coverdale shared his retirement news via all his social media accounts, including the @whitesnake Instagram page. He shared it was time for him to “call it a day.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, brothers and sisters of the Snake, a special announcement for you. After 50 years-plus of an incredible journey with you — with Deep Purple, with Whitesnake, Jimmy Page — the last few years it has been very evident to me that it’s time really for me to hang up my rock ‘n’ roll platform shoes and my skintight jeans.”

Referring to his iconic and long, golden locks, the musician joked:

“And as you can see, we’ve taken care of the lion’s wig.”

In the end, he raised his glass and declared:

“It really is time for me to just enjoy my retirement, and I hope you can appreciate that. Once again, I love you with all my heart. Fare thee well.”

The announcement was followed by a lengthy tribute showing David Coverdale’s onstage moments over five decades, as his song Fare Thee Well played in the background alongside a 2025 remix of the single Forevermore (originally released by Whitesnake in 2011) by Tom Gordon and Chris Collier.

Cindy Barker commented under her husband’s retirement announcement on Instagram. She wrote:

“So proud of you, Baby!! You gave so much of yourself, so freely, and with so much love and care. Now you get to do whatever you want to!”

Their son, Jasper, also took to social media and paid him homage.

“I know no greater man, nor any better father, for the family I was born into is one of international renown thanks to his empathy, talent and ability to connect with so many people the world over. And now, the next step… whatever you bloody well desire, Sir!” the proud son wrote.

He also gave a shoutout to David Coverdale for being a fantastic father, husband, storyteller, warrior, artist, and hero.

“Bravo, Dada, for a thousand thousand jobs well done. Let the histories honor you forevermore,” Jasper added.

The former member of Deep Purple was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. He suffered a sinus infection in 2022 and hadn’t toured with Whitesnake ever since.
