American Vice President JD Vance appeared on George Stephanopoulos’ Sunday morning ABC News program, This Week, on October 12, 2025, where the duo had a heated verbal exchange. Stephanopoulos asked Vance about the bribery allegations against White House border czar Tom Homan.
However, the Vice President appeared to deflect the question and later stated:
“I think the American people would benefit much more from [talking about the shutdown] than from you going down some weird left-wing rabbit hole where the facts clearly show that Tom Homan didn’t engage in any criminal wrongdoing.”
George Stephanopoulos, a television host, political commentator, and former Democratic advisor during the Bill Clinton administration, is married to actress, comedian, author, and producer Ali Wentworth. The couple shares two children.
Following JD Vance’s reply, the TV host abruptly ended the interview. He thanked the VP for his time and cut to the commercials.
“It’s not a weird left-wing rabbit hole! I didn’t insinuate anything, I asked you whether Tom Homan accepted $50,000 as was heard on an audio tape recorded by the FBI in September 2024, and you did not answer the question. Thank you for your time this morning,” Stephanopoulos stated.
When JD Vance tried to clarify by saying, “No, George, I said…” George ignored him, turned to the camera, and said,
“We’ll be right back!”
In the wake of the now-viral interview, Stephanopoulos began trending online. Later, Vance shared a post on the social networking site X and wrote that George Stephanopoulos didn’t “care” about
“Peace in the Middle East? China threatening critical supply chains? Government shutdown?”
According to Vance’s sarcastic tweet, the Good Morning America co-anchor was instead here to “focus” on the “real story,” aka the “fake scandal” involving Tom Homan.
Exploring George Stephanopoulos’ personal life
George Stephanopoulos, 64, met Ali Wentworth, 60, in the summer of 2001 on a blind date organized by mutual friends. They were engaged two months later and walked down the aisle in November 2001 on the Upper East Side of New York City.
They had a daughter named Elliott the following year. Their second child, daughter Harper, came in 2005. During a 2001 interview with the New York Times, Stephanopoulos said:
“We went from strangers to friends to being in love in days.”
Ali is an actress, comedian, writer, and producer. She was born in January 1965 in Washington, D.C. Her mother, Muffie Cabot, was an heiress, socialite, and the White House Social Secretary to former First Lady Nancy Reagan for two years in the 1980s. Wentworth’s father, Eric, was a journalist with The Washington Post.
Ali Wentworth graduated from New York University and pursued dramatic arts at Bard College in New York. She debuted as an actress in 1992 on the Fox sketch comedy series In Living Color. Later, she appeared in a 1995 episode of Seinfeld and as a recurring character on the WB show, Felicity.

George Stephanopoulos’ wife of 24 years has also acted as a correspondent on The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Ali Wentworth is the co-host of Living It Up! With Ali and Jack with Jack Ford and a guest anchor for Live with Kelly and Ryan, The Talk, and The View.
Wentworth’s other acting credits include The Marriage Ref and Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields. She was also a writer on Head Case and the creator of Nightcap and appeared in both. The mother of two launched her podcast, Go Ask Ali, in 2020 and penned a book titled Ali’s Well That Ends Well that same year.
Together with her husband and Alyssa Mastromonaco, Ali founded BedBy8, a production company, in 2021. She co-hosted the ABV reality series The Parent Test the following year.
Elliott Anastasia Stephanopoulos was born on September 9, 2002, according to Hello Magazine. She attended Brown University and later moved to London for a study abroad program. While she keeps a low profile, she is often mentioned on her mother’s podcast, Go Ask Ali, and is featured on her parents’ social media.
In 2004, she served as a production assistant on George Stephanopoulos’ show Good Morning America when he was in London covering Kate Middleton’s cancer journey.
Elliott’s sister, Harper Andrea Stephanopoulos, was born on June 2, 2005. She is a student at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She maintains a private life away from the limelight.
Over the years, the two sisters have appeared on several red carpets with their parents, including the 2023 premiere of the movie Pretty Baby in NYC. George Stephanopoulos and his family also attended a Taylor Swift concert that year.
This is not the first time Stephanopoulos has feuded with the MAGA administration. Earlier, in March 2024, the longtime Donald Trump critic stated during one of his live shows that
“judges and two separate juries have found [Trump] liable for r*pe.”
Trump sued him, which was later settled for $15 million by his employer, ABC, in November after the POTUS won the election. The amount was donated to the presidential library, while an additional $1 million was paid to cover Trump’s legal fees.
