On September 4, 2025, the world bid farewell to legendary Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, celebrated for his timeless elegance and signature minimalist luxury. He was 91.
Born in 1934 in Piacenza, Italy, Armani was the middle child of Ugo Armani and Maria Raimondi, growing up alongside his sister Rosanna and brother Sergio. His passing was confirmed by the Armani Group in an official statement. It read:
“Il Signor Armani, as he was always respectfully and admiringly called by employees and collaborators, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones. In this company, we have always felt like part of a family. Today, with deep emotion, we feel the void left by the one who founded and nurtured this family with vision, passion, and dedication.”
The message added that after his demise, the company will be run by his “employees and the family members” who are committed to protecting what he built. His death has sparked a sudden interest in his personal life.
Here are more details.
All about Giorgio Armani's parents
Giorgio Armani has often spoken about the importance of family, stating that he shares a close bond with his own throughout his life. Although he never married or had children, he cherished his family, particularly his younger sister Rosanna, his nieces, and nephews, who were involved in the family business.
He was born to Ugo Armani and Maria Raimondi in the northern Italian town of Piacenza. His father was an accountant who worked for a transport company. His mother was a homemaker, known for her minimalist sense of elegance.
Armani told in an interview that despite being poor, he and his siblings looked rich among their classmates, giving the credit to his mother’s designing skills and elegance, according to a report in Reuters.

In an interview with the Telegraph in 2017, he described his father as elegant. He said:
“He was very elegant. Very simple, but neat. A clean-cut man who didn’t have much time because he had to work. He had to support three children. So he didn’t really have the opportunity to get out of his limited world. I always appreciated that he made sure we never lacked anything.”
Giorgio Armani further said that he has inherited his father’s accounting ability and his mother’s dressmaking talents.
While speaking about his mother’s charm, with whom he shared facial features, Giorgio Armani told Numero in an interview:
“My mother was a beautiful, elegant woman, who could be sweet and strong at the same time. Rigour and dignity characterized her entire life. Her practical way to face and solve problems, even in difficult times, had a great influence on me.”
He added:
“Seeing my mother wearing her jackets certainly sparked an interest in clothing. She was doing more with less, and certainly not dressing like a doll. The jacket had a function, but she wore it elegantly, and it gave her presence.”
He concluded his message by adding that his mother influenced his “idea of beauty as a harmony of body and mind, expressiveness, a certain form of grace – exactness.”
Besides his family, Giorgio Armani was in a romantic relationship with Sergio Galeotti, an Italian architect. They met in 1966 and co-founded the Armani label together. However, their romance was short-lived as Galeotti passed away in 1985 after suffering complications from AIDS.
