Irish actress-singer Jessie Buckley won the Best Actress Award at the 2026 Critics’ Choice Awards for her role as the female lead Agnes in Hamnet. She beat Chase Infiniti, Rose Byrne, Renate Reinsve, Amanda Seyfried, and Emma Stone.

While accepting the honor from Jeff Goldblum, Buckley, 36, gave a shoutout to her entire cast and crew, starting with her onscreen husband, Paul Mescal, who played the role of William Shakespeare.

“Paul, I bloody love you, man. And I know loads of other women do in this room too, but tough sh*t. I could drink you like water, working with you every single day. You're a giant of the heart, and thank you so much for making me a little more human,” Jessie noted.

She also gave a shoutout to her three onscreen children, Jacobi Jupe, Olivia Lynes, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach.

“To my kiddywinks- Jacobi, Olivia, Bodhi — thank you for reminding me what it is to have a ball again…” the actress added.

In real life, Jessie Buckley is married to a mental health worker, Freddie. They welcomed their baby girl in 2025.

The 31st annual Critics’ Choice Awards were held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on January 4.

All we know about Jessie Buckley’s personal life

In March 2021, Jessie Buckley spoke about her boyfriend Freddie for the first time during an interview with The Guardian. She called him her “fella” and shared that they have been together for “a while.”

Two years later, during the summer of 2023, reports surfaced that the private couple had tied the knot at their Norfolk residence. However, it wasn’t until January 2024 that the actress-singer gave out a few details about her personal life.

Jessie Buckley appeared on the Table Manners podcast and mentioned having met her husband on a blind date organized by mutual friends.

“He’s working in mental health, he’s gone back to university. He is gorgeous. We have a little flat in Dalston, though Norfolk is our heart home. We probably split 50/50 between them at the moment. But we’ve only been in Norfolk for three years,” Buckley noted.

The Wild Rose star continued:

“We were originally going to move to Suffolk because we’d fallen in love there. Then friends of ours moved to Norfolk and bought this old place for practically nothing at auction, pulled the weeds out of it and just did the whole thing up. And then they showed us the house that we now live in, which is from the 1500s… an amazing old house that’s been there forever.”

While Jessie Buckley is Irish, her husband is English and hails from Islington, Inner London. She shared a funny anecdote about Freddie during the same podcast.

“I came to London at 17, and anytime I brought an English boyfriend back to Ireland, my granny would call him Séamus, whatever his name was. 'How are you, Séamus?' I don’t know why she did it. But Freddie stayed Freddie,” Jessie quipped.

Buckley hard-launched her pregnancy on the red carpet of CinemaCon in Las Vegas in April 2025, where she posed for the camera while flaunting her baby bump.

It remains unclear when and where the Oscar-nominated actress gave birth. However, last month, she appeared on the Modern Love podcast and revealed that she welcomed her first child with Freddie.

“Everyone is doing great. I mean, everything is different… Everything’s new. This little human’s new. You’re new. Your relationship’s new. Your whole relationship to the world is new. It’s intense, but it’s just – I just love it. I love it so much,” she noted during the New York Times-sponsored podcast.

About her baby girl, Jessie Buckley shared:

“I see her little personality start to come through… I see this life force in her and determination. And I hope she loves life as much as I do.”

Before marrying Freddie, Buckley was in a relationship with English actor James Norton. They split in April 2018. At the time, she told The Times that it was “acrimonious,” but she continued to remain “great friends” with a “great man.” She also hinted that staying apart for a year for their respective careers impacted their romance.

Hamnet is the retelling of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes’ domestic lives and derives its name from Shakespeare’s son Hamnet, who died young and inspired the bard to pen the tragedy, Hamlet. The historical drama film is based on Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel of the same name. Besides Buckley and Mescal, it also stars Joe Alwyn and Emily Watson. Hamnet is written and directed by Chloe Zhao.

“I’m really proud to be putting this film out in the world, and I’m so happy that it’s been responded to in the way it has. I mean, to make anything at all is a triumph. The other stuff is extra,” Jessie Buckley told PEOPLE during the New York premiere.

She was previously nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award in 2023 in the Best Supporting Actress category for Women Talking.
